What these words mean
Underrated horse
We think this horse has a better chance than the bookmakers' odds suggest.
Our top pick
The horse with the highest TrackLab Score in the race.
TrackLab Score
Our model's estimate of a horse's chance of winning, as a number out of 100. The scores in a race add up to 100.
Ground
How the going was on the day, from Firm (hard and dry) to Heavy (very wet and muddy). On all-weather tracks it's Standard, Fast or Slow.
Race level (Class)
From Class 1 (elite) down to Class 7 (lowest).
Group, Grade and Listed
The top races. Group 1 on the Flat and Grade 1 over jumps are the highest level, then 2 and 3. Listed races sit just below.
Handicap
The handicapper gives better horses more weight to carry, so in theory they'd all finish together.
Maiden
A race for horses that haven't won yet.
Novice
A race for horses that are new to this type of race.
Chase, hurdle and bumper
Chase: jumps over fences. Hurdle: jumps over low hurdles. Bumper: a flat race for young jump horses.
Distance (m and f)
m is a mile and f a furlong, about 200 metres; 8 furlongs make a mile.
Each way
A bet that pays out if your horse wins or finishes in the top 3 (how far down it pays varies by race). It is really two bets.
Weight
How much the horse carries, including the jockey. 9st 5lb means nine stone five pounds.
Jockey claim
An apprentice jockey can claim a weight discount, so the horse carries a little less.
Headgear
Blinkers, visor, cheekpieces, tongue tie, hood and eyeshield change what the horse sees or feels.
✓ Starts at this distance✓ Career starts✓ Horse record on this going
Has won at this course and distanceWon 1 of last 5Won here 2 timesHas won on this groundWon at this distance 7 times
Why this score
+Has won at this distance 7 times before. A horse that has shown it can last the trip is a plus.
+With 45 races behind it, this horse knows what to expect. Experienced runners tend to cope better with pressure.
−This is a 28-runner race, and the size is not ideal. A big field means more traffic. A small field means nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Eight-year-old mare and one of the few course winners with two wins at Ripon, though her form is patchy (6th at Carlisle 17 days ago). She's a soft-ground specialist (4 wins from 11) but zero wins from 10 starts on normal ground means the going here directly opposes her strength.
+Has raced 7 times on this ground with a low win rate. Today's ground may not suit it.
+Racing against weaker rivals than last time. Think of a Premier League team playing in the Championship. The drop in level helps.
−A 28-runner race works against this horse. Too many runners can mean getting boxed in. Too few can mean nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Won twice in late May 2025 but hasn't found the winner's circle since—she's been chasing form for over a year despite three straight top-3 finishes earlier in that spell. The bigger concern is zero wins from 7 starts on normal ground, which is exactly what she faces here.
Back quickly after its last runWon 0 of last 5Has won on this ground
Why this score
+Today's ground is Good, and that suits this horse. Like athletes who prefer one type of surface, horses have favourite ground.
+Facing weaker rivals than last time out. When a horse drops to an easier race, it often finds things easier.
−28 runners today is not the number this horse wants. The number of runners changes how a race is run.
TrackLab Insight
Placed in two of his last three races (both very close calls: 0.8L and 0.2L) and carries the highest rating, suggesting he's the form horse—the jockey-trainer combo has a strong record together. At six years old with 37 races and an 11% win rate, he's consistent but struggles on right-handed galloping tracks like this one.
Won 0 of last 5Raced here beforeHas won on this groundWon at this distance 4 times
Why this score
+Has won 4 times over this distance. That is a good sign the race length suits the horse.
+An experienced horse with 55 career runs. Experienced horses tend to be steadier and less likely to run badly.
−A 28-runner race works against this horse. Too many runners can mean getting boxed in. Too few can mean nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Placed in two of last three races (both very close finishes at Catterick) and shows recent momentum, but still hasn't won since his form collapsed. Crucially, he has zero wins from his six attempts at Ripon despite this being a course he's raced at repeatedly, and no wins on normal ground either.
+Has only raced on this type of ground once or twice, so it is hard to say if it suits the horse.
+Has won over this distance 3 times. We know the horse can last this far, which removes one big question.
−This is a 28-runner race, and the size is not ideal. A big field means more traffic. A small field means nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
The standout in this field with a 33% career win rate (3 from 9) and three wins from his last six races—clearly on an upward curve with genuine class. At this trip he's 3 from 5, and he has a 50% win rate on good-to-firm ground, though normal conditions here may blunt that edge slightly.
Best record at this trip (3 from 5)Best career win rate in field (1 in 3)
+This type of ground has not suited the horse: 5 runs without much success. Some horses prefer different ground.
+Facing weaker rivals than last time out. When a horse drops to an easier race, it often finds things easier.
−This is a 28-runner race, and the size is not ideal. A big field means more traffic. A small field means nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Won just once from 19 races at Newcastle over five furlongs and hasn't broken through again, with poor recent record (6th at Newcastle, 2nd at Newcastle, 9th at Southwell). Zero wins on good ground and zero wins on soft ground narrow his window, and normal conditions here don't align with his single win profile.
−The jockey has not had many recent rides, so there is little recent form to go on.
TrackLab Insight
Never raced on normal ground in her career, so this is a genuine unknown—she's been competitive on softer turf and finished second just 33 days ago at Windsor. At just three years old with no wins from ten races, she needs to break through soon, but the ground switch here is a gamble her record doesn't support.
+Has raced 6 times on this ground with a low win rate. Today's ground may not suit it.
−Not enough recent rides for The jockey to judge their form. That is not good or bad news.
TrackLab Insight
Just claimed his maiden win at Hamilton 24 days ago and arrives here still looking for consistency—placed in 2 of last 3 races is the bright spot. However, he has zero wins from 14 starts on any good ground variant and struggles on this type of turf-based track, making a quick follow-up win unlikely.
Dropping to an easier raceBack quickly after its last runWon 0 of last 5Won at this distance 1 time
Why this score
+A low win rate on this ground from 6 previous runs. The ground could work against the horse today.
−The jockey has not had many recent rides, so there is little recent form to go on.
TrackLab Insight
Steps up two classes after finishing ninth at Leicester just five days ago, and that quick turnaround after heavy defeat is asking a lot. She has only one win from 12 races and zero wins on normal ground specifically, though she does have form on good-to-firm surfaces.
Won 0 of last 5Raced here beforeHas won on this groundWon at this distance 3 times
Why this score
+Handles this ground well, with 20% of its races won on it. The ground can change a horse's chances a lot.
−There is little recent data for The jockey. Without enough rides, it is hard to judge their form.
TrackLab Insight
Seven-year-old with 41 career races who has struggled badly in recent weeks (7th at Catterick, 7th at Beverley), and his record on normal ground is non-existent despite success on good and good-to-soft surfaces. A Catterick specialist but not at this track, and normal ground is his Achilles' heel.

Why this score
+7 wins at this race length. Distance matters. If it is too short, the horse cannot use its staying power. If it is too long, the horse gets tired.
−There is little recent data for The jockey. Without enough rides, it is hard to judge their form.
TrackLab Insight
The most experienced horse in the field with 68 races and two wins already at Ripon (2 from 6), making him a genuine course specialist—he was second at Catterick just 18 days ago. However, zero wins from 41 starts on normal ground is a major red flag that undermines his course form.

TrackLab Insight
Just broke through for her first win at Ffos Las 36 days ago and actually has her best record on normal ground (1 from 3 races), which is a rare strength in this field. At three years old with limited experience, she's unexposed but the long gap since that win and lack of pattern are concerns.

TrackLab Insight
One of the few genuine course winners here with three wins at Ripon from 17 starts (18%) and back-to-back wins at Redcar just weeks ago, showing red-hot form. The major problem: zero wins from 14 starts on normal ground, making his course form essentially meaningless for this race.

TrackLab Insight
Experienced seven-year-old with 43 races and a 14% win rate, but recent form is poor (10th at Pontefract nine days ago) and he has zero wins from 8 starts on normal ground. No clear angle here—he's better suited to soft conditions and left-handed tracks he doesn't get.

TrackLab Insight
The most experienced horse in the entire field with 69 races and just won at Hamilton six days ago, arriving here with genuine momentum—he's a mud specialist (5 wins from 21 on soft, 3 from 5 on heavy). But zero wins from 5 starts on normal ground and the tight quick turnaround (6 days) after a Hamilton win are both concerns.

TrackLab Insight
Steps up two classes after an ugly 11th at Ayr nine days ago, and his recent form has completely collapsed from two wins last May. He has a solid 40% win rate at this trip (5f–6½f) but zero wins from 3 starts on normal ground, which doesn't favour his style.

Why this score

TrackLab Insight
Steps up two classes and has never raced on normal ground before, with only four career races total and no wins yet—this is a significant unknown. Raced just yesterday (87 days is incorrect per profile), so freshness isn't his advantage here.

Why this score
−The jockey has not had many recent rides, so there is little recent form to go on.
TrackLab Insight
Won at Catterick 18 days ago and carries the joint-highest rating (65), showing he's competitive at this level—his jockey partnership has produced four wins from 13 races. However, he has only one win from 12 starts on normal ground and zero wins at Newcastle, limiting his ceiling on this turf.
Won 0 of last 5Won here 1 timeHas won on this ground
Why this score
+This horse runs well on today's ground, with a 20% win rate from 5 runs. The ground makes a big difference in racing.
−Not enough recent rides for The jockey to judge their form. That is not good or bad news.
TrackLab Insight
Won here at Ripon once (25 April) but has given no other real indication of class—only one win from 16 races overall—and recent form is poor (10th at Redcar, 9th at York). Zero wins on normal ground and zero wins on standard ground suggest he's hit the bottom of this market.

TrackLab Insight
Hasn't raced seriously in months (last run 78 days ago) after a poor campaign, with only one win from 17 races and no wins on normal ground. The long absence and weak record make him a difficult proposition here.

TrackLab Insight
Steps up two classes after finishing third at Lingfield 25 days ago, and has only two wins from 25 races overall. He does have form on good ground (2 from 11) but zero wins on normal ground and struggles on left-handed galloping tracks—this course ticks both negative boxes.
+Very little experience on today's ground. With so few runs, we cannot say if it suits the horse.
−The jockey has not had many recent rides, so there is little recent form to go on.
TrackLab Insight
Three-year-old with two wins from 13 races (15% win rate) who is well suited by 7f–1m distances (33% win rate) and has decent recent form in places. However, she's winless from 9 starts on left-handed galloping tracks and hasn't raced in 27 days, making momentum a real question.

Steps up two classes after a poor performance 74 days ago, and with only one win from 10 career races plus a lengthy absence, freshness is questionable. He's never raced on normal ground before, adding to the unknown factor in an already thin record.

TrackLab Insight
Five-year-old mare with experience (38 races) who has been well beaten in her last two races (9th at Catterick, 9th at Redcar), showing poor current form. She's a specialist on good-to-soft (2 from 3, 67%) and soft ground but has zero wins from 12 starts on good-to-firm, making normal conditions a mixed bag.

TrackLab Insight
Lowest-rated horse in the field (45 OR, 13lbs below average) and carries the lightest weight, but races again after just two days following an 8th at Pontefract. He's a soft-ground specialist (2 from 7) but zero wins from 10 starts on normal ground, and tight turnaround suggests fatigue.

Lightly raced three-year-old with only three career races and zero wins, though he's shown two places from three attempts—promising but thin data. Never raced on normal ground before, making this a genuine experiment rather than a calculated entry.

+S. Whitaker has won 5.4% of their races in their career. Trainers at this level know how to get horses ready.

TrackLab Insight
Winless from 14 career races and completely out of form (5th at Pontefract, 14th at Redcar), with only three minor places in 14 attempts. This is a horse still looking for his first win and offers no reason to expect it here.

TrackLab Insight
Has three straight top-3 finishes showing real momentum (3rd at Leicester, 3rd at Hamilton, 2nd at Carlisle), the only horse with a genuine streak of form. However, he hasn't won since August 2024 (nearly two years) and has zero wins from 7 starts on good ground, which limits his upside despite the current run.
Each way is two equal bets. Half your total goes on the horse to win. Half goes on it to finish in the top 3.
If it wins, both bets pay.
If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, only the top-3 part pays. Some races pay 4th or 5th too, and some only 2nd. The top-3 part pays a fraction of the win odds, often 1/4 or 1/5.
Otherwise, both bets lose.
On the bookmaker's slip, the amount box is per bet. Enter half your total. For example, £0.50 each way on the slip is £1 in all.

How odds work
The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1.
The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win, but the more you'd win if it does.
A small first number (like 8/13) means bookmakers think the horse is more likely to win. At 8/13, £13 wins £8. Evens means £1 wins £1.
