Easterby's operation has sent out 138 winners already this season, which speaks to a stable that knows how to place horses and get the best from them. Valentine Catcher typically competes at Class 4 level — the solid, bread-and-butter middle ground of British racing — and has won 1 of its 8 races at that level, a 12% win rate that mirrors its overall career average. Consistent, if not spectacular.

What makes the story more interesting is what Easterby said during a stable tour back in April 2024. He noted that Valentine Catcher had done all its racing on wet or muddy ground, simply because that was what was available at the time, but he believed the horse would be better on faster, drier conditions. That is a significant hint: a trainer suggesting his horse has been running on unsuitable ground for much of its career. If he is right, the best of Valentine Catcher may not yet have been seen on a racecourse.

The most frequent partner in the saddle has been jockey David Allan, who has ridden the horse in 6 of its 17 races, winning once — a rate of about 1 in 6. Allan was aboard for the debut win at Redcar back in October 2023, and his words afterwards stuck. He described a horse that was slow away, a little green, but travelled beautifully through the race and won with something to spare. "There's obviously plenty of potential there," he said, and he sounded genuinely impressed rather than politely diplomatic.

Recent form tells a different story — finishes of 9th, 6th, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 2nd in the last six outings, most recent first, with that second place the one bright spot in an otherwise frustrating run. Valentine Catcher raced just yesterday, so it is very much in the thick of things. Whether a change to faster ground finally unlocks what Easterby suspects is there remains the question worth watching.
