What is interesting about Valentine Catcher is not what he has done, but what his trainer Tim Easterby thought he could do. After that debut win at Redcar in October 2023—a race where jockey David Allan noted the horse was green and slow away but travelled well and won easily—Easterby was optimistic enough to mention a potential summer campaign that might include top-class races. The trainer also believed Valentine Catcher would improve when switched to faster ground after spending his early career racing only on wet or muddy surfaces, simply because nothing else was available. At Class 4 level, the horse has won 1 of 8 races, a decent win rate of 12 percent, suggesting he is not out of place at that grade. The problem is that ground conditions may not be the full answer. Nearly two years without a win is a long drought for any horse, and Valentine Catcher will need to prove that those early hopes were justified before he becomes interesting again.
