Uncertainty

Simon Whitaker's yard at Scarcroft in West Yorkshire has sent out four winners this season, so the operation knows how to get horses into the winner's enclosure. The question is whether Uncertainty can become the fifth. Whitaker will be well aware that the horse has gone six races without threatening to win, and that the recent numbers — mostly finishing in the bottom half of the field — point to a horse that is either finding its level or hasn't yet found its best conditions.

That level, so far, has been Class 5 — the lower end of the racing ladder, where fields are typically made up of horses without strong records. Even there, Uncertainty has drawn a blank in all three attempts at that grade. Finishing third or fourth in a Class 5 race is not the kind of form that sets pulses racing, and zero wins from 11 career starts means this horse has never once been first past the post. For context, a horse winning just 1 in every 11 races would be considered modest — Uncertainty hasn't managed that single breakthrough yet.

Raced just yesterday and still active, there is at least the sense that the team believes something can be unlocked. At three years old, the horse is young enough that improvement remains possible — some horses take time to fill out physically and mentally before things click. Whether Uncertainty finds that moment soon, or whether the name continues to feel rather apt, is the question that comes with every entry form Whitaker submits. Racing does occasionally reward patience. It has not rewarded it yet here.
