No Return

The recent form tells a familiar story for a horse of this level: ninth on the last outing just a day ago, then fifth, fifth again, fourth, seventh, and third before that. It is the pattern of a horse that arrives competitively but rarely gets the job done. There is a clue in the ground, though. No Return has won 2 of its 11 races on normal conditions, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 5.5 races—a marked jump from its overall 8% win rate. When the ground is not playing tricks, this horse shows something. On faster or wetter ground, it struggles badly.

Trainer Charlie Johnston, who runs a powerful yard at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire and has sent out 131 winners already this season, has saddled No Return throughout. The regular pilot, Ronan Whelan, has yet to taste victory aboard—five rides, no wins—which raises the question of whether a change might help. At Class 4 level, the top tier of ordinary racing, No Return has won nothing from four attempts. The window for this horse may not be wide, but it remains open on a normal-ground day at a lesser grade.
