No Return

The two wins tell an interesting story on their own. The first came at The Curragh in April 2025, one of Ireland's most prestigious tracks, where plenty of horses come unstuck against stronger fields. The second followed at Fairyhouse in late May 2025. Two wins in Ireland, both on normal ground — and that detail about the ground matters. On standard conditions, No Return has won 2 of its 10 races, a 20% win rate that works out to roughly 1 in every 5. That is a genuinely good number, and it tells you this horse has a clear preference. Wet or muddy ground, fast and firm ground — neither seems to suit. Give it normal underfoot conditions and it becomes a different animal.

What is harder to explain is the form since May 2025. No Return has gone 13 months without a win, and the last six races read 7-8-4-4-5-5 — finishing mid-pack, never threatening, never collapsing either. It raced just yesterday, so fatigue is not the question; this is simply a horse that has found a level and settled into it. Regular partner Ronan Whelan has ridden it five times without a win between them, though it would be unfair to pin that on the jockey alone.

The class question is also worth raising. No Return has run four times at Class 4 level — one step below the top tier — and has not won once. That is not a crisis, but it does suggest that when the competition steps up slightly, the horse finds life harder. Charlie Johnston's yard is in fine form with 131 winners on the board this season, which means the team has plenty of options and the patience to place their horses carefully. For No Return, finding the right race on the right ground could unlock that 1-in-5 version of itself — the one that showed up twice in Ireland and briefly looked like something special.
