The horse's real strength is knowing where to show up. At Redcar, his local track in the northeast, he has won four of his ten races there—a forty per cent win rate that stands out sharply against his overall numbers. He was back at Redcar just this week, winning on August 22, which shows he still has plenty left to offer. He also has a clear preference for fast, dry ground, winning four from nine races when conditions are firm—again, forty-four per cent—compared to just two wins from eight when the ground is slightly soft. Those are not small differences. They matter to how he runs, and it appears his trainer, Peter Niven, based at Barton-le-Street in North Yorkshire, knows it.

Most of Hurstwood's victories have come in Class 6 races, the lower tier of the sport, where he has won seven of forty-four starts—a win rate of sixteen per cent. He competes there regularly, and it is where he belongs. His partnership with jockey Aiden Brookes has yielded two wins from fifteen rides together, suggesting they work reasonably well as a unit, though there is no particular spark there. What matters for Hurstwood is not flash or headlines. It is finding the right race, at the right track, on the right ground, and doing his job. At nine years old, with a recent win under his belt and racing as recently as yesterday, he is showing no signs of stopping.
