Taygar

At that racecourse on the west coast of Scotland, Taygar has won 2 of just 3 visits. That is extraordinary. Most horses that compete regularly across British tracks are lucky to find one place that suits them particularly well. Taygar has essentially turned Ayr into a home track, and that kind of course form is exactly the sort of thing experienced punters circle in red. The most recent of those wins came in July 2025, when trainer Michael Dods was refreshingly candid afterwards: Taygar is, in his own words, "tricky." She goes down to the start early, she runs on her own terms, and she is not what you would call straightforward. But she has ability, and on a day when the ground was soft and conditions suited her, she kept finding more when it mattered.

Dods trains out of Piercebridge in County Durham and has had 43 winners already this season — a yard clearly in fine form. Connor Beasley rides Taygar most often, partnering her in 9 of her 30 races and winning 1 of them, roughly 1 in 9 together. That is a modest return, but it reflects as much Taygar's temperament as anything else. She needs things to fall right: the ground, the tactics, the day.

Her recent run of form makes sobering reading — she has finished no better than third in her last six races, with a couple of mid-field finishes suggesting she has not been at her sharpest. She raced just yesterday, keeping her active and clearly well in herself. The question now is whether the yard can find her another opportunity at Ayr, on soft ground, where the evidence suggests she transforms into a different animal entirely. When the stars align for this horse, she is genuinely tough to beat. Getting those stars to align, though, is very much the challenge.
