Golden Mabel

Her most recent form tells a mixed story. She ran ninth just yesterday, then sixth and eighth before that, so she is not firing on all cylinders right now. But between the rough patches there was a sixth-place finish and a second-place effort, signs that she remains competitive even when things are not quite clicking. Over ten races she has found the frame in two of them — that one win and one second place — which means she is close to scoring again more often than the bare win rate might suggest.

Lisa Williamson's yard at Kelsall has been doing decent work this season with six winners so far, and Golden Mabel looks like a horse with room to improve. She is still very young and still learning. If she can get back to those shorter distances where she is one in four, and if the track and conditions suit her the way they did at Ffos Las, there is no reason she cannot add to her tally. The next few races will tell whether that August win was the start of better things or simply a flash in the pan.
