The nap of the race, and it is easy to see why — this horse has won its last two races back-to-back and arrives here in the form of its life. Drawn highest in the field in stall 12, which is the weakest part of the track at this course and distance, so that is the one thing worth watching. If the draw doesn't bite, this is the one to beat.

"She must be one of the fastest Cannock Chases there is around. She got her hat-trick up at Ripon last week and it's never easy to win three on the bounce. The ground was plenty tight enough there and it was just because she was in sugood form with herself that we got away with it. When Graham Lee won on her at Thirsk a couple of years ago, we thought she was going to be an 80-plus horse, but last year she underperformed all season. She was never right and we gave her a wind op over the winter. The way she was galloping, I thought she'd win first time up but she didn't. We then upped her to 7f and she ran a little bit better, but as soon as we put a bit of headgear on she was a different mare. She didn't cost a lot of money and she's paid for herself several times over. She's straightforward and easy to train, and there's more to come as on her old marks there's still a bit of wiggle room. She loves proper softground. 28-06-24"

The editorial tips this one to run well, and recent form backs that up — two second-place finishes in its last two races suggest it is knocking on the door. Rated higher than most rivals here, it arrives as one of the more accomplished horses in the field with five career wins. The catch is a poor record on normal ground, where it has never won in four attempts.

One of the most experienced runners in the field with 29 races under its belt, but only three wins from all that experience tells its own story. A third-place finish at this very course last time out is a small positive, though it has never won on normal ground in four attempts. Hard to make a strong case at the current odds.

The only horse in this field with a win at this exact course and distance, which is a genuine standout in a 12-runner field. That said, it has just one career win from 15 races overall, and recent form — two eighths and a fifth — is modest at best. The Nottingham course form is the reason to give it a second look.

Still searching for a first career win after seven races, and recent form offers little encouragement — five consecutive fifth-place finishes is a tough pattern to ignore. The least experienced horse in the field, and the jockey-trainer partnership has managed just one win from 46 races together. Honest data, limited hope.
Three of this horse's five career wins have come at Chelmsford, not Nottingham, so the course form doesn't transfer directly here. Recent runs have been poor — seventh, twelfth, and tenth in its last three races — and it has never won on normal ground in six attempts. Hard to fancy based on current evidence.

The best career win rate in the field at roughly one win in every five races, and the standout marker flags the best record on today's ground conditions among the runners. The problem is a run of six consecutive races without a win stretching back months, including a heavy defeat at Newmarket last time. Potential is there on paper, but form says otherwise right now.

Zero wins from 15 career races, and the data flags that it has never raced on normal ground before — today would be a first. The jockey-trainer pairing has also yet to find a winner together in five attempts. Too many unknowns to inspire confidence.

A veteran of 78 races with 12 wins to his name, Alafdhal has the best record at this exact trip in the field — seven wins from 35 races over 6 furlongs. However, he hasn't raced in over three months, finished last on his most recent outing, and has never won on normal ground in five attempts. Age and absence are working against him today.
No wins, no placed finishes from five career races, and this horse is returning after the longest absence in the field — 254 days off the track. It has also never raced on normal ground, adding another layer of uncertainty. Carries the lightest weight in the race, but the overall picture is difficult to be positive about.

The biggest outsider in the race at 51.0, and the record on today's normal ground is a red flag — zero wins from 10 attempts on this type of surface. Back after a four-month absence with three consecutive poor finishes before that, including two at the bottom of the field. Very hard to recommend.
How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
