What these words mean
Underrated horse
We think this horse has a better chance than the bookmakers' odds suggest.
Our top pick
The horse with the highest TrackLab Score in the race.
TrackLab Score
Our model's estimate of a horse's chance of winning, as a number out of 100. The scores in a race add up to 100.
Ground
How the going was on the day, from Firm (hard and dry) to Heavy (very wet and muddy). On all-weather tracks it's Standard, Fast or Slow.
Race level (Class)
From Class 1 (elite) down to Class 7 (lowest).
Group, Grade and Listed
The top races. Group 1 on the Flat and Grade 1 over jumps are the highest level, then 2 and 3. Listed races sit just below.
Handicap
The handicapper gives better horses more weight to carry, so in theory they'd all finish together.
Maiden
A race for horses that haven't won yet.
Novice
A race for horses that are new to this type of race.
Chase, hurdle and bumper
Chase: jumps over fences. Hurdle: jumps over low hurdles. Bumper: a flat race for young jump horses.
Distance (m and f)
m is a mile and f a furlong, about 200 metres; 8 furlongs make a mile.
Each way
A bet that pays out if your horse wins or finishes in the top 3 (how far down it pays varies by race). It is really two bets.
Weight
How much the horse carries, including the jockey. 9st 5lb means nine stone five pounds.
Jockey claim
An apprentice jockey can claim a weight discount, so the horse carries a little less.
Headgear
Blinkers, visor, cheekpieces, tongue tie, hood and eyeshield change what the horse sees or feels.
✓ Horse record on this going✓ Horse record at this course✓ Trainer wins at this course
Won 1 of last 5Raced here beforeWon at this distance 4 times
Why this score
+A low win rate on this ground from 5 previous runs. The ground could work against the horse today.
+Has run 1 time at this track with no wins yet. Some horses do not take to some courses.
−Last raced 35 days ago. That is a normal gap between runs.
TrackLab Insight
Keldeo arrives as one of the top-rated horses in the field but comes with a glaring concern: she has never won on normal or dry ground conditions in a combined 11 attempts, and today's dry track at Musselburgh is exactly that. She also has no wins from 11 races on left-handed tracks, and Musselburgh runs left-handed — so two separate patterns in the data both point the same way. A five-week break since her last run adds another layer of uncertainty.

Why this score
+J. Goldie has a good 9.6% record here. A trainer who does well at one course is worth noting.
+J. Goldie has won 9.7% of their races in their career. Trainers at this level know how to get horses ready.
−Has won here 2 times in 4 visits. That record at this course is a good sign.
TrackLab Insight
Woohoo has more standout markers than any other horse in this race: she has won twice from four visits to this exact course, her record on dry ground is the best in the field, and she has the highest win rate of any runner here — winning roughly 1 in every 5 races. She has finished second in each of her last three runs, which suggests she is knocking loudly on the door right now, and her jockey Paul Mulrennan and trainer Jim Goldie have an established partnership that works. On paper, this is the horse the rest have to beat.

Back quickly after its last runWon 1 of last 5Raced here beforeWon at this distance 1 time
Why this score
+This type of ground has not suited the horse: 3 runs without much success. Some horses prefer different ground.
+Racing against weaker rivals than last time. Think of a Premier League team playing in the Championship. The drop in level helps.
−G. Harrison wins only 0% of the time here. That weak record at this course counts against the horse.
TrackLab Insight
The highest-rated horse in the field at a career-defining four years old, Hi Lord carries top weight but has earned it — two thirds in his last three runs suggest he is in decent shape right now. His record on normal ground conditions is thin, with no wins in three tries on fast ground, so the dry track here is a question mark. Still, at this age he is still improving, and his official rating being the highest in the field means the handicapper rates him above his rivals.
+Very little experience on today's ground. With so few runs, we cannot say if it suits the horse.
+With £4,187 in prize money, this is a competitive race. The horse has been entered for a reason.
−A 6.1% record at this course for P. Morris. This is not a track where the trainer has done well.
TrackLab Insight
The most striking fact about Peregrine Falcon is simple: she has never won in 16 career races, yet has placed nine times — a horse that keeps finding the frame without ever quite crossing the line first. She comes back after a 47-day break, which is the longest absence in the field, having been beaten just half a length at Lingfield last time, so there is a hint of ability there. Whether she can finally convert that placed form into a first win is the question she has never yet answered.
Has won at this course and distanceBack quickly after its last runWon 0 of last 5Won here 1 timeWon at this distance 8 times
Why this score
+Has won over this distance 8 times. We know the horse can last this far, which removes one big question.
+This type of ground has not suited the horse: 13 runs without much success. Some horses prefer different ground.
−Not enough recent rides for The jockey to judge their form. That is not good or bad news.
TrackLab Insight
A veteran of 67 races who earns his keep through sheer persistence, Albegone is back on the track just six days after finishing sixth at Catterick — a remarkably quick turnaround. The concern here is the ground: he has never won on dry conditions in 13 attempts, and Musselburgh on a dry day is exactly the sort of surface he tends to leave his best form behind on. Hard to fancy with confidence given that record.

Why this score
−There is little recent data for The jockey. Without enough rides, it is hard to judge their form.
TrackLab Insight
Nine years old, 40 races, and just one win to his name — Hard Nut is the longest shot in the field by some margin, rated 16 points below the field average, which is a significant gap at this level. His last three runs have all been at this course, finishing ninth, seventh, and seventh, so recent form here offers nothing to build on. Carries the lowest weight in the field, which helps, but the overall picture is one of a horse struggling to compete at even this modest level.
Back quickly after its last runWon 1 of last 5Raced here beforeWon at this distance 6 times
Why this score
+Has raced 7 times on this ground with a low win rate. Today's ground may not suit it.
−The jockey has not had many recent rides, so there is little recent form to go on.
TrackLab Insight
The standout marker here — three straight top-three finishes — looks less convincing on closer inspection: his most recent run was actually a fifth at Hamilton just five days ago, so the current form is mixed rather than sparkling. More tellingly, he has never won at Musselburgh in five attempts, and his record on dry ground is poor, with no wins in 8 tries on similar conditions. A regular in the frame, but this course and ground combination looks to be working against him.

TrackLab Insight
Racing for the second time in five days after a third at Hamilton, Jm Jhingree is one of the fresher horses in this field on the clock — and his record at this exact trip of five furlongs is the best in the field, with four wins from 25 races at the distance. His win rate of roughly 1 in every 6 races puts him among the more accomplished horses here, and a recent win at Hamilton shows he is in form. The quick turnaround is worth watching, but the five-furlong record is a genuine plus.

Back quickly after its last runWon 1 of last 5Has won on this groundWon at this distance 1 time
Why this score
+Handles this ground well, with 20% of its races won on it. The ground can change a horse's chances a lot.
−Not enough recent rides for The jockey to judge their form. That is not good or bad news.
TrackLab Insight
Marajito is back on the track just three days after finishing fourth at Nottingham — the quickest turnaround in the field — and her recent form shows a run of mid-field finishes with no win since earlier in the season. Her best ground has been dry conditions, which today's surface provides, but she has never won on standard track conditions in three tries, and Musselburgh on a dry day falls into that category. Short on time between runs and without a win in recent weeks, it is hard to make a strong case.
Has won at this course and distanceBack quickly after its last runWon 0 of last 5Won here 2 timesHas won on this ground
Why this score
+7 wins at this race length. Distance matters. If it is too short, the horse cannot use its staying power. If it is too long, the horse gets tired.
−There is little recent data for The jockey. Without enough rides, it is hard to judge their form.
TrackLab Insight
The most experienced horse in the field by a distance — 81 races compared to a field average of 39 — Sixcor is also the joint-lowest rated alongside Hard Nut, sitting 15 points below the field average. His recent form shows a third at Hamilton just five days ago, so he is clearly still competitive, but at this level and this rating, he is essentially outclassed on paper by most of his rivals. Eight wins from 81 races is the record of a willing competitor rather than a race-winner in the making.
Each way is two equal bets. Half your total goes on the horse to win. Half goes on it to finish in the top 3.
If it wins, both bets pay.
If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, only the top-3 part pays. Some races pay 4th or 5th too, and some only 2nd. The top-3 part pays a fraction of the win odds, often 1/4 or 1/5.
Otherwise, both bets lose.

How odds work
The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1.
The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win, but the more you'd win if it does.
A small first number (like 8/13) means bookmakers think the horse is more likely to win. At 8/13, £13 wins £8. Evens means £1 wins £1.
