Hard Nut

The numbers are hard to dress up. One win from 40 races is a win rate of roughly 1 in every 40 outings — well below what you would hope for from any horse at any level. Hard Nut competes almost exclusively at Class 6, which is the lowest tier of British flat racing, the level where horses go when the game has sorted itself out and the options are limited. Even there, the record reads just 1 win from 29 races at that level, a 3% rate. There have been three placed finishes along the way, meaning Hard Nut has crept into the top three on a handful of occasions without ever crossing the line first, but recent form tells a bleaker tale: finishes of fourth, fourth, twelfth, seventh, seventh, and ninth in the last six races suggest the horse is increasingly finding it hard to compete even in the most accessible company.

Regular jockey Paul Mulrennan has partnered Hard Nut six times without a win between them, though it would be unfair to pin that on either horse or rider — this is simply a horse that wins very rarely regardless of who is aboard. The trainer, Linda Perratt, is clearly a capable operator: her yard has sent out 19 winners this season, which shows she knows how to get horses to perform. That Hard Nut has not added to its tally reflects the horse's limitations rather than any failing in the training.

What is genuinely interesting here is the sheer persistence — 40 races at nine years old, racing as recently as yesterday. Some horses simply keep showing up, and Hard Nut is one of them. The win at Musselburgh remains a real moment, a day when everything clicked. Whether there is another one lurking somewhere, only time will tell.
