What these words mean
Underrated horse
We think this horse has a better chance than the bookmakers' odds suggest.
Our top pick
The horse with the highest TrackLab Score in the race.
TrackLab Score
Our model's estimate of a horse's chance, as a percentage. The scores in a race add up to 100%.
Ground
How the going was on the day, from Firm (hard and dry) to Heavy (very wet and muddy). On all-weather tracks it's Standard, Fast or Slow.
Race level (Class)
From Class 1 (elite) down to Class 7 (lowest).
Group, Grade and Listed
The top races. Group 1 on the Flat and Grade 1 over jumps are the highest level, then 2 and 3. Listed races sit just below.
Handicap
The handicapper gives better horses more weight to carry, so in theory they'd all finish together.
Maiden
A race for horses that haven't won yet.
Novice
A race for horses that are new to this type of race.
Chase, hurdle and bumper
Chase: jumps over fences. Hurdle: jumps over low hurdles. Bumper: a flat race for young jump horses.
Distance (m and f)
m is a mile and f a furlong, about 200 metres; 8 furlongs make a mile.
Each way
A bet that pays out if your horse wins or finishes in a place. It is really two bets.
Weight
How much the horse carries, including the jockey. 9st 5lb means nine stone five pounds.
Jockey claim
An apprentice jockey can claim a weight discount, so the horse carries a little less.
Headgear
Blinkers, visor, cheekpieces, tongue tie, hood and eyeshield change what the horse sees or feels.
+A low win rate on this ground from 4 previous runs. The ground could work against the horse today.
+Has won 1 time at this course from 3 runs. A horse that has won here before may like the course.
−J. James Feane has a 6.7% win rate at this course. It is not their strongest track. Some stables do better at some tracks than others.
TrackLab Insight
Four-year-old with one career win at Leopardstown, which makes him one of the few course winners in the field. A 50-day absence is concerning, and his record on good ground is blank across four starts—the very ground he faces today makes a comeback unlikely.
+A low win rate on this ground from 3 previous runs. The ground could work against the horse today.
+Has won here 1 time in 4 visits. That record at this course is a good sign.
−S. Thorne has a 7.7% win rate at this course. It is not their strongest track. Some stables do better at some tracks than others.
TrackLab Insight
Underrated five-year-old mare with a course win under her belt and a respectable record on good-to-yielding ground (40% win rate from 5 starts). Recent form at Leopardstown and Navan shows she's competitive at this level, though her lack of wins on pure good ground leaves some doubt on today's conditions.

Why this score
+An 11.0% overall win rate for J. P. Murtagh. That suggests a trainer who picks the right races for their horses.
+A low win rate on this ground from 6 previous runs. The ground could work against the horse today.
−A 16-runner race works against this horse. Too many runners can mean getting boxed in. Too few can mean nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Underrated three-year-old on a genuine run of form: three consecutive top-3 finishes and a fresh win at Listowel just 26 days ago. The 15% win rate from 13 races isn't eye-catching, but momentum matters—he's heading in the right direction after a long quiet spell and represents real value.
+R. Anthony Devine has a good 20% record here. A trainer who does well at one course is worth noting.
+Came home 1st last time out. A good recent run often carries over to the next race.
−A 4.3% career win rate for R. Colgan. That is on the low side and could matter today.
TrackLab Insight
Market favourite (9/2) with an eye-catching 50% win rate from just four career races and back-to-back wins in the last six weeks. The catch: he has never raced on normal ground before, making this a step into genuine unknown territory despite his impressive recent record.
Never raced on normal ground3 straight top-3 finishesMarket favourite (9/2)
Wearing tongue strapBack quickly after its last runWon 1 of last 5Raced here beforeLikes this ground (wins 50% of runs)
Why this score
+Has run 1 time at this track with no wins yet. Some horses do not take to some courses.
+Mrs J. Harrington has a good 9.7% record here. A trainer who does well at one course is worth noting.
−This is a 16-runner race, and the size is not ideal. A big field means more traffic. A small field means nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Three-year-old with the best career win rate in the field at 25% (2 from 8) and a 67% success rate on good ground from three starts—a standout record for today's conditions. Recent form is mixed (6th-3rd-4th), but the ground-specific strength and youth suggest he could improve at the business end.
Best record on this ground (2 from 4)Best career win rate in field (1 in 4)
+This type of ground has not suited the horse: 3 runs without much success. Some horses prefer different ground.
+Came home 3rd last time out. A good recent run often carries over to the next race.
−A 5.5% record at this course for D. Gerard Hogan. This is not a track where the trainer has done well.
TrackLab Insight
Five-year-old in the grip of real form: three straight top-3 finishes including a win at Listowel 27 days ago and a 3rd-place at the Curragh 14 days ago. His 17% win rate is solid, but he has zero wins on good ground from three attempts, which is a problem on today's surface.
Won 1 of last 5Won here 1 timeLikes this ground (wins 40% of runs)
Why this score
+Wins 40% of the time on this type of ground. Some horses run much better on soft or firm ground. This one suits today's ground.
+Today's ground is Good, and that suits this horse. Like athletes who prefer one type of surface, horses have favourite ground.
−A 4.6% record at this course for A. McGuinness. This is not a track where the trainer has done well.
TrackLab Insight
Three-year-old with a 21% win rate from 14 races—one of the better strike rates in the field—and he does own a win at this track. His last three runs paint a worrying picture: 7th-3rd-11th at the Curragh, which suggests form is fragile right now despite the solid recent record on good ground.
Wearing cheekpiecesWon 0 of last 5Raced here before
Why this score
+A low win rate on this ground from 5 previous runs. The ground could work against the horse today.
+This horse is happy on Good ground. When the ground suits, a horse can run to its best.
−J. Dalton has a 4.5% overall win rate, which is lower than we would like to see. A jockey who wins less often can hold back even a good horse.
TrackLab Insight
Four-year-old carrying the lightest weight in the field (126lbs) but hamstrung by an 11% win rate and no victories in nearly a year. Recent form shows three top-3 finishes from five races, but zero wins on good ground from five attempts rules him out on today's conditions.
Wearing blinkersWon 0 of last 5Raced here beforeHas won on this ground
Why this score
+Today's ground is Good, and that suits this horse. Like athletes who prefer one type of surface, horses have favourite ground.
+Has raced here 5 times without winning. This course has not suited the horse so far.
−T. Gibney has a 1.1% win rate at this course. It is not their strongest track. Some stables do better at some tracks than others.
TrackLab Insight
Six-year-old chasing his first win since June 2024—nearly two and a half years without a victory. His 14% win rate from 28 races is honest enough, but the long drought and a 15th-place finish at Leopardstown just 36 days ago suggest he's lost whatever spark he once had.
One of the more successful in the field (4 career wins)
+This type of ground has not suited the horse: 9 runs without much success. Some horses prefer different ground.
+This horse is happy on Good ground. When the ground suits, a horse can run to its best.
−A 3.1% record at this course for P. F. O'Donnell. This is not a track where the trainer has done well.
TrackLab Insight
Nine-year-old with 43 career races and a glaring Achilles heel: zero wins on good ground across 14 attempts. His recent back-to-back wins at Listowel came on softer surfaces he thrives on, but this race on normal ground sits outside his comfort zone. Course specialist at Listowel he may be, but that expertise doesn't travel to Leopardstown.
Wearing hoodBack quickly after its last runWon 0 of last 5Won here 1 timeLikes this ground (wins 33% of runs)
Why this score
+Wins 33% of the time on this type of ground. Some horses run much better on soft or firm ground. This one suits today's ground.
+A. Melia has a good 16.7% record here. A trainer who does well at one course is worth noting.
−Came 13th in the last race. It might have been an off day, or the horse may be losing form.
TrackLab Insight
Runs back just three days after a 13th-place finish at the Curragh, an aggressive schedule that raises red flags. His 18% win rate looks solid but masks a horse struggling badly at right-handed galloping tracks (0 from 6) and with zero wins at the Curragh in six attempts—a pattern that repeats here.
Runs again after just 3 daysUnfancied in the market despite a high rating
Wearing cheekpiecesBack after 113 days offWon 1 of last 5Won here 1 timeHas won on this ground
Why this score
+N. Crosse has won 5.3% of their races in their career. That steady record counts for a lot.
+Mrs J. Harrington has won 10.7% of their races in their career. Trainers at this level know how to get horses ready.
−This is a 16-runner race, and the size is not ideal. A big field means more traffic. A small field means nowhere to hide.
TrackLab Insight
Four-year-old filly returning after a 113-day absence with the only two wins at this distance in the entire field. Her record at 1m stands at 1 from 3, but the long spell away and sparse recent data mean her fitness and readiness are genuine question marks.
Only winner at this distanceBest record at this trip (1 from 3)
Wearing tongue strapWon 1 of last 5Raced here beforeHas won on this ground
Why this score
+Handles this ground well, with 20% of its races won on it. The ground can change a horse's chances a lot.
+The Good ground works in this horse's favour. The ground makes a big difference in racing, and today it helps.
−A 4.6% record at this course for A. McGuinness. This is not a track where the trainer has done well.
TrackLab Insight
Five-year-old who finished just 0.3 lengths second at the Curragh 22 days ago and carries three top-3 finishes in his last six races. A 17% win rate from 24 races is respectable, but he has zero wins on good ground from five attempts—a significant vulnerability for today's conditions.
One of the more successful in the field (4 career wins)
Back after 128 days offWon 1 of last 5Raced here before
Why this score
+Has only raced on this type of ground once or twice, so it is hard to say if it suits the horse.
+Today's ground is Good, and that suits this horse. Like athletes who prefer one type of surface, horses have favourite ground.
−S. Thorne has a 7.7% win rate at this course. It is not their strongest track. Some stables do better at some tracks than others.
TrackLab Insight
Three-year-old returning after a 128-day absence—the longest lay-off in the field. He has won just once from six races and finished in the top 3 five times, but the extended time away combined with limited racing experience makes his readiness uncertain.
+Has only raced on this type of ground once or twice, so it is hard to say if it suits the horse.
+This horse is happy on Good ground. When the ground suits, a horse can run to its best.
−A 0% record at this course for J. Andrew Kinsella. This is not a track where the trainer has done well.
TrackLab Insight
Editorial pick, but the data tells a harsh story: winless from eight career races at 100/1 and rated 8lbs below the field average. His 10th and 16th-place finishes at the Curragh and Galway suggest he is outclassed, and a recent 4th at Gowran Park is his only competitive showing in months.
+Has only raced on this type of ground once or twice, so it is hard to say if it suits the horse.
+Results are getting better with each run. A horse on the way up has a good chance of a win soon.
−R. De Aguiar has a 0% win rate at this course. It is not their strongest track. Some stables do better at some tracks than others.
TrackLab Insight
Three-year-old with a 33% win rate specifically on standard/good ground, which is exactly what he faces today. However, his last run was a 13th-place defeat at the Curragh just 14 days ago, and he has yet to prove he can carry that ground preference into consistent form.
Each way is two equal bets. Half your total goes on the horse to win. Half goes on it to finish in the top 3.
If it wins, both bets pay.
If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, only the top-3 part pays. Some races pay 4th or 5th too, and some only 2nd. The top-3 part pays a fraction of the win odds, often 1/4 or 1/5.
Otherwise, both bets lose.
On the bookmaker's slip, the amount box is per bet. Enter half your total. For example, £0.50 each way on the slip is £1 in all.
Ask your bookmaker which finishing positions pay, and what fraction of the win odds they pay
On your bookmaker's bet slip, tick 'Each way' before you place the bet.

How odds work
The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1.
The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win, but the more you'd win if it does.
A small first number (like 8/13) means bookmakers think the horse is more likely to win. At 8/13, £13 wins £8. Evens means £1 wins £1.
