The form makes sense when you look at who rides him and what conditions suit him best. Gavin Ryan, his most frequent partner, has won three of thirteen races together—a 23 per cent win rate that stands well above Booyea's overall return. The horse also has a clear preference for normal ground, where he has won three times from thirteen races, double his general win rate. When the ground is anything else, or when Ryan is not in the saddle, Booyea becomes a much harder horse to back with confidence. His recent record tells you how far the decline has gone: over his last six races, his best finish was fourth place, and he has been out of the placings in three of those six runs.

Trained by Thomas Gibney at Trim in County Meath, Booyea remains active—he raced just a day ago and finished fifth—but the question now is whether those conditions that once lit him up can do so again. The yard is ticking along with five winners already this season, which suggests it is capable, but Booyea himself is heading toward the kind of age where horses either find their feet or resign themselves to being useful without ever being dependable. His next chance will come when the ground is right and Ryan is available, but those windows have been closing for a long time.
