Zachary Hickes is the market favourite at 3.0 after breaking through with a win at Yarmouth just 15 days ago, making this his first attempt stepping up from that success. With only four races under his belt, data on his preferences is thin, but the market confidence suggests the Roger Varian yard sees something promising—though he'll need to prove he can handle a stiffer test than Great Yarmouth.

Arcturus Flame is second in the market at 5.0 but carries the burden of chasing a win for over 16 months—he has managed only one victory from 16 races and has won just 1 in every 17 attempts. His placement finishes (three in his last four runs) show he belongs in races like this, yet the failure to close out any of those near-misses raises questions about whether he lacks that final killer instinct.

Gooloogong has never raced on dry ground and his Goodwood record is a blank (0 wins from 5 attempts), making today's conditions and venue a significant concern for a horse built for softer, wetter surfaces. His recent third place here 29 days ago looks like his best Goodwood effort, but he remains a Kempton specialist where he wins roughly 1 in 3 races rather than a Goodwood horse.

Trainer Quotes
Oct 2025
"He was an ex-Aidan O'Brien horse owned by Mark and Lavinia Sherwood, who have been long-standing supporters. He won a novice hurdle at Fontwell before Christmas and then won on the Flat under Jack Mitchell at Kempton. He's a lovely dual-purpose horse. I think it just took a while for him - he probably spent a few months chasing City Of Troy or being chased by City Of Troy up the gallops. It's taken a while for him to come back to us but he's an exciting, good dual-purpose horse for the winter. He'll mix and match between hurdles and the Flat - there's some lovely staying handicap options through the winter. He's back in now and will be ready to go in six weeks' time. He's rated 114 over hurdles - the maddest dream is that we can nibble him up a stone over hurdles and then sneak into the bottom of one of those big handicaps at Cheltenham, Liverpool or Punchestown in the spring. He would be my dark horse, I love him - he's one for both codes and I think we are just at the beginning with him. 15-10-25"

"He's a nice colt who came forward nicely from his only run at two to win at Navan in March. We're thinking about the Queen's Vase for him but nothing is set in stone yet. 15-06-23"

Appier is the only horse in the field with a Goodwood win on his record (scored here 78 days ago) and wins roughly 1 in 5 races, making him a reliable operator at this level. He backed that up with a solid third at Sandown just 36 days ago, though he must overcome a struggle on right-handed galloping tracks—Goodwood is one such track where he has never won.

Educator has won both his last two races (at Newmarket and Yarmouth 23 and 32 days ago) and is the only horse in the field with back-to-back wins, riding genuine momentum. His form on fast, dry ground is excellent (4 wins from 11 starts, 36%), making today's conditions ideal, though this is his first pairing with jockey Daniel Tudhope and he hasn't raced here before.

Caprelo was rated equal-best with Arcturus Flame but has drifted dramatically in the market to 19.5, suggesting the market has spotted something concerning. His last two Goodwood runs have been forgettable (4th and 5th), and while he wins roughly 1 in 6 races on dry ground, he hasn't raced on it in the last 52 days—his last outing was 52 days ago at Kempton where he finished 5th.

Scarlet Moon is the only horse in the field who has won 1 in every 4-5 races overall (24% win rate) and has run twice in the last three weeks, including a narrow second at Lingfield just 25 days ago. However, he hasn't won since November and his Goodwood record is dreadful (10th place in his only run here), raising questions about whether conditions or the course simply don't suit him.

Mr Freedom owns the best win rate in the field at roughly 1 in 4 races and boasts the standout form advantage on dry ground (2 wins from 4 races, 50%)—exactly what today demands. His record at 1m6f is solid (1 win from 3), though his recent run of form (8th at Epsom, 5th at Goodwood) suggests he needs time to find his rhythm after a 59-day layoff.

Two Plus Two carries 16lbs less than much of the field and the lowest weight overall, yet is rated 60—well below the average—suggesting this is a genuinely hard task for an 12% win-rate horse who has never beaten these rivals on ability. His recent form (two second places by a combined margin of just 0.4 lengths) shows he's competitive, but the weight relief and low rating hint at a horse who may be out of his depth here.

Taritino has won 10 races from 55 attempts (18% win rate) and showed exactly what conditions suit him with a win at Chester just 63 days ago on dry ground. His record on firm ground is strong (4 wins from 14 starts, 29%) and the 1m6f distance suits him, though like many in this field he struggles on right-handed galloping tracks—and Goodwood is precisely that.

Russian Rumour sits just 2lbs behind the favourite in the ratings but her recent record is inconsistent: three placed finishes in her last four races sound promising until you realise she hasn't won for months. On dry ground she has a poor record, and her Goodwood effort four months ago (4th, beaten 18.5 lengths) suggests this track and ground combination don't bring out her best.

Despite being rated top of the handicap, Bright Legend is drifting in the market at 31.0 and represents a genuine gamble—he has never raced on dry ground in his career and his recent form is dire (7th ten days ago, beaten 17 lengths). His only wins have come on softer surfaces, making today's firm conditions a significant unknown at best and a major liability at worst.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
