What these words mean
Underrated horse
We think this horse has a better chance than the bookmakers' odds suggest.
Our top pick
The horse with the highest TrackLab Score in the race.
TrackLab Score
Our model's estimate of a horse's chance, as a percentage. The scores in a race add up to 100%.
Ground
How the going was on the day, from Firm (hard and dry) to Heavy (very wet and muddy). On all-weather tracks it's Standard, Fast or Slow.
Race level (Class)
From Class 1 (elite) down to Class 7 (lowest).
Group, Grade and Listed
The top races. Group 1 on the Flat and Grade 1 over jumps are the highest level, then 2 and 3. Listed races sit just below.
Handicap
The handicapper gives better horses more weight to carry, so in theory they'd all finish together.
Maiden
A race for horses that haven't won yet.
Novice
A race for horses that are new to this type of race.
Chase, hurdle and bumper
Chase: jumps over fences. Hurdle: jumps over low hurdles. Bumper: a flat race for young jump horses.
Distance (m and f)
m is a mile and f a furlong, about 200 metres; 8 furlongs make a mile.
Each way
A bet that pays out if your horse wins or finishes in a place. It is really two bets.
Weight
How much the horse carries, including the jockey. 9st 5lb means nine stone five pounds.
Jockey claim
An apprentice jockey can claim a weight discount, so the horse carries a little less.
Headgear
Blinkers, visor, cheekpieces, tongue tie, hood and eyeshield change what the horse sees or feels.

Why this score
+D. Skelton has a good 25% record here. A trainer who does well at one course is worth noting.
+Handles this ground well, with 43% of its races won on it. The ground can change a horse's chances a lot.
−D. Skelton wins only 25% of the time here. That weak record at this course counts against the horse.
TrackLab Insight
Edelak is the standout here on form and class—a sharp hitter who wins roughly 2 out of every 5 races and holds a 17lb rating advantage over his rivals. His record on normal ground is excellent (3 wins from 7 runs), and he's proven at this 2m 4f distance, but a 47-length defeat at Chepstow just 8 days ago is a red flag that suggests he may not be at peak sharpness right now despite stepping up in class to take on weaker opposition.

Why this score
+J. Snowden has a good 23.5% record here. A trainer who does well at one course is worth noting.
+Very little experience on today's ground. With so few runs, we cannot say if it suits the horse.
TrackLab Insight
Tommy Pickles comes here as the favourite and the only horse in the field with a proven win at this exact distance (1 from 3 at 2m 4f), but there's a major concern: he hasn't raced for 211 days, by far the longest absence in the field. His career record is modest at 1 win from 5 races, though he has finished in the top 3 on three other occasions, which suggests he belongs at this level even if he hasn't always won.
Only winner at this distanceBest record at this trip (1 from 3)Absent 211 days (longest in field)Market favourite (11/10)
+Has raced 7 times on this ground with a low win rate. Today's ground may not suit it.
+This is a 3-runner race, and the size suits this horse. Some horses prefer a small field with less traffic. Others do well in a crowd.
−D. Thompson wins 5.3% of their races overall. That is below the top trainers.
TrackLab Insight
Rock Armour is the most experienced runner with 30 races under his belt, but the numbers are brutal: just 1 win in his entire career and 0 wins in his last 20 races. He fell at Hexham 8 days ago and has never won on good or soft ground, which makes his prospects here extremely difficult despite a finishing third at this track 39 days ago.
Each way is two equal bets. Half your total goes on the horse to win. Half goes on it to finish in the top 3.
If it wins, both bets pay.
If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, only the top-3 part pays. Some races pay 4th or 5th too, and some only 2nd. The top-3 part pays a fraction of the win odds, often 1/4 or 1/5.
Otherwise, both bets lose.
On the bookmaker's slip, the amount box is per bet. Enter half your total. For example, £0.50 each way on the slip is £1 in all.
Ask your bookmaker which finishing positions pay, and what fraction of the win odds they pay
On your bookmaker's bet slip, tick 'Each way' before you place the bet.

How odds work
The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1.
The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win, but the more you'd win if it does.
A small first number (like 8/13) means bookmakers think the horse is more likely to win. At 8/13, £13 wins £8. Evens means £1 wins £1.
What you'll need. Photo ID (passport or driving licence) and a bank statement or utility bill from the last few months. Type your name exactly as it appears on your ID. Take photos with all four corners showing and no glare.
How long it takes. Signing up takes about 5 minutes. Most people are checked instantly. If the bookmaker asks for documents it can take a few days.
Verify straight away. Do the ID check right after signing up, before you ask for any money out.
