What these words mean
Underrated horse
We think this horse has a better chance than the bookmakers' odds suggest.
Our top pick
The horse with the highest TrackLab Score in the race.
TrackLab Score
Our model's estimate of a horse's chance, as a percentage. The scores in a race add up to 100%.
Ground
How the going was on the day, from Firm (hard and dry) to Heavy (very wet and muddy). On all-weather tracks it's Standard, Fast or Slow.
Race level (Class)
From Class 1 (elite) down to Class 7 (lowest).
Group, Grade and Listed
The top races. Group 1 on the Flat and Grade 1 over jumps are the highest level, then 2 and 3. Listed races sit just below.
Handicap
The handicapper gives better horses more weight to carry, so in theory they'd all finish together.
Maiden
A race for horses that haven't won yet.
Novice
A race for horses that are new to this type of race.
Chase, hurdle and bumper
Chase: jumps over fences. Hurdle: jumps over low hurdles. Bumper: a flat race for young jump horses.
Distance (m and f)
m is a mile and f a furlong, about 200 metres; 8 furlongs make a mile.
Each way
A bet that pays out if your horse wins or finishes in a place. It is really two bets.
Weight
How much the horse carries, including the jockey. 9st 5lb means nine stone five pounds.
Jockey claim
An apprentice jockey can claim a weight discount, so the horse carries a little less.
Headgear
Blinkers, visor, cheekpieces, tongue tie, hood and eyeshield change what the horse sees or feels.

Why this score
+D. Skelton wins 25% of their races at this course. Some trainers aim horses at particular tracks, and this one does well here.
+Handles this ground well, with 67% of its races won on it. The ground can change a horse's chances a lot.
−Its average finish over the last three races is 3. That is too far back. Its results have not been steady lately.
TrackLab Insight
The market favourite at 15/8 with the best career win rate in the field (roughly 2 wins every 5 races) and has landed two wins at Cartmel in the past two months, showing real momentum. Ideal here: thrives on good ground (2 from 3) and loves this distance (67% win rate over 2m+), making him the clear threat to Williethebuilder.

Why this score
+D. McMenamin wins 14.4% of all their races. That is a strong record. A jockey who wins often gives a horse a better chance.
+A. Hamilton has won 16.3% of their races in their career. Trainers at this level know how to get horses ready.
−An average finish of 3 over recent runs. Finishing in the middle or further back so often counts against the horse.
TrackLab Insight
A course winner (1 from 4 at Sedgefield) who has been running well without winning recently — two seconds in the past six months — and finished 5th at Hexham just 16 days ago. The combination of course familiarity and consistent near-misses makes him an each-way candidate, though he hasn't won since an early season success in Class 4.

Why this score
+A 33.3% win rate at this course for L. Hughes. Trainers who know a course often send out their horses well suited to it.
+This horse runs well on today's ground, with a 40% win rate from 10 runs. The ground makes a big difference in racing.
−Facing tougher rivals than last time. It is like moving up to a harder league. The step up is a challenge.
TrackLab Insight
A genuine Sedgefield specialist with 2 wins from 4 here and has won this exact course and distance before, making him a real contender despite middling overall form. He beat just one horse when 4th at Kelso 14 days ago, but his 40% win rate on good ground and proven record at this track give him a legitimate chance — underrated at 9/2.

Why this score
+A 36% win rate at this course for C. Williams. Trainers who know a course often send out their horses well suited to it.
+Wins 30% of the time on this type of ground. Some horses run much better on soft or firm ground. This one suits today's ground.
−C. Williams has a 9.4% overall win rate, which is on the low side. That may mean the horse is not at its best.
TrackLab Insight
Top-rated by 16 pounds and the editorial selection, but returns after 197 days away — the longest absence in the field — and his last two runs (7th and 18th) suggest he may need the outing to find his feet. He excels on good ground (3 wins from 10 starts) and has the credentials on paper, but the long layoff and recent dull form create genuine question marks over whether he'll deliver his rating.

Why this score
+With 54 races behind it, this horse knows what to expect. Experienced runners tend to cope better with pressure.
+This type of ground has not suited the horse: 21 runs without much success. Some horses prefer different ground.
−S. England wins 12.2% of their races overall. That is below the top trainers.
TrackLab Insight
The most experienced runner (54 races) won a Class 2 at Market Rasen in September, but has pulled up in both recent starts and finished 8th before that, painting a picture of a horse struggling for form. Limited recent data and a poor record on this track's right-handed gallop are significant concerns.

Why this score
+Rated 112 by the official rater. That is a strong number based on past results.
+J. Hamilton wins 8.9% of all their races. That is a strong record. A jockey who wins often gives a horse a better chance.
−O. Pears wins only 0% of the time here. That weak record at this course counts against the horse.
TrackLab Insight
Ran 2nd at Sedgefield just 39 days ago (beaten 1.2 lengths) and has excellent form on good ground (7 wins from 23 starts, 30%), but the data from her most recent run 17 days ago is unknown, making it difficult to assess her current condition. Her track record here and ground preference are genuine positives, though her struggles on variations of good ground (0 wins from 8 starts on firmer or softer) could matter if conditions shift.

Why this score
+Has won here 2 times in 5 visits. That record at this course is a good sign.
+The starting stall helps today. At this course, some stalls have done better than others.
−P. Kirby's horses finish only 18% of their races. A low number can point to fitness or preparation problems.
TrackLab Insight
Carries the lowest weight in the field and has won twice from 5 races at Sedgefield, but his recent form is alarming: 7th here 11 days ago (beaten 38.8 lengths) and 7th at Perth before that. His excellent record on soft ground and at Catterick Bridge are irrelevant in a race on good ground at a different track, and he looks out of form.

Why this score
+T. Davidson wins 19.4% of their races at this course. Some trainers aim horses at particular tracks, and this one does well here.
+This horse runs well on today's ground, with a 45% win rate from 11 runs. The ground makes a big difference in racing.
−27 days since the last run. That is a usual break, so there is nothing to read into it.
TrackLab Insight
Has won 7 races from 30 starts and boasts an excellent 45% win rate on good ground, but crashed to 11th (beaten 62 lengths) at Hamilton 27 days ago in what looks like an unexplained poor run. His pedigree suggests he could bounce back, though recent form is a concern.

Each way is two equal bets. Half your total goes on the horse to win. Half goes on it to finish in the top 3.
If it wins, both bets pay.
If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, only the top-3 part pays. Some races pay 4th or 5th too, and some only 2nd. The top-3 part pays a fraction of the win odds, often 1/4 or 1/5.
Otherwise, both bets lose.
On the bookmaker's slip, the amount box is per bet. Enter half your total. For example, £0.50 each way on the slip is £1 in all.
Ask your bookmaker which finishing positions pay, and what fraction of the win odds they pay
On your bookmaker's bet slip, tick 'Each way' before you place the bet.

How odds work
The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1.
The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win, but the more you'd win if it does.
A small first number (like 8/13) means bookmakers think the horse is more likely to win. At 8/13, £13 wins £8. Evens means £1 wins £1.
What you'll need. Photo ID (passport or driving licence) and a bank statement or utility bill from the last few months. Type your name exactly as it appears on your ID. Take photos with all four corners showing and no glare.
How long it takes. Signing up takes about 5 minutes. Most people are checked instantly. If the bookmaker asks for documents it can take a few days.
Verify straight away. Do the ID check right after signing up, before you ask for any money out.
