The numbers are honest rather than flattering. A win rate of roughly 1 in every 25 races is modest by any measure, and the recent run of form — finishing 7th, 11th, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 12th across the last six outings — shows a horse that occasionally flashes promise but cannot quite string it all together. The 3rd place finish in that sequence is worth noting; it suggests the ability is still there on the right day.

What makes the record more puzzling is that Rock Armour has been tried most often at distances of a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs — 16 races at that trip — and yet that is also where its only win came. So the distance is not the problem. It has never won at Class 5 level, which is the everyday, entry-level tier of racing, going 0 from 12 attempts there. For a horse that found the winner's enclosure once, not being able to repeat that at the easiest level of competition is the most pressing question mark hanging over it.

Trainer David Thompson operates out of Bolam in County Durham, a small yard that has sent out 9 winners this season — a decent return that shows they know how to get a horse ready to win. Rock Armour raced just yesterday, so the team clearly keep it busy and believe there is another day in it. At five years old, it is not young, but it is not done either. The challenge now is finding the right race, the right conditions, and the right moment to turn one of those near-misses into something to celebrate.
