One of the two horses the editorial verdict singles out as most interesting, dropping significantly in class compared to his usual level, which in theory gives him a major edge over the field. The question marks are real though — he has never raced on dry ground, hasn't run for over four months, and has only three career races under his belt, so there's plenty still unknown about him.

The market favourite at 5.0, and that confidence looks earned — he ran second here at Newmarket just 16 days ago, beaten only half a length, so this course and trip are already proven. He carries the second-highest weight in the field, but his recent form is the freshest and most relevant of any horse in the race.

"He's a nice horse. We got him beat on his debut by running him over 5f. The winner, who's gone in again, was from the breeze-ups and just caught him out. He won at Newcastle when he hit the front and pricked his ears - he's a very laid-back character. He looked like he wanted seven and he might, but I think a stiff six is going to be great for him. He shows more speed at home than he does at the track and I think there's a lot more to come. He has a sales race entry at the Curragh on September 14 and that's his target. He'd probably have 10lb to find there but I think he can be competitive. 04-09-25"

The only horse in this field who has already won at Newmarket, and he did it just 16 days ago — so he comes here in the form of his life, having won back-to-back races. A 50% career win rate from 6 races is exceptional, and the fact he already knows how to win around this course is a serious advantage over most of his rivals.

The other horse the editorial verdict highlights as a genuine contender — he's never won a race from five attempts, but has placed four times, including two seconds in Class 2 company against strong rivals. Today he tries cheekpieces for the first time, drops in the ratings compared to most rivals, and has a jockey who has won 4 from 13 in the past two weeks — the theory being that a small equipment change unlocks a horse that keeps finishing just behind the winner.

"I rate him highly and was delighted with his first run at Beverley. If he'd have jumped a bit sharper he'd have probably won, but it was a good start and we've got the option of running in the Coventry Stakes or the Norfolk. At the moment it's looking more like the Norfolk because Wathnan have other options for the Coventry but he'll have an entry in both in case plans change. We won the Norfolk with Shareholder last season but Naval Light is a more laid-back character with a lot of ability. 12-06-25"

Arrives with the second-highest rating in the field at OR 94, level with the favourite, but his win record of just 1 from 6 races tells a story of a horse that threatens without delivering. He's wearing a tongue strap today and his odds have drifted out to 10.0 despite the strong rating, which suggests the market isn't convinced he's ready to put it all together.

Drew the best stall in the race at number 1 — low draws have the strongest record at this course and distance — but his recent form makes grim reading, finishing sixth here at Newmarket just 16 days ago, beaten 5 lengths. His sole win came at York in a Class 2 race, but the six subsequent runs have mostly been disappointing, and his odds drifting to 20.0 reflects that.

Has been absent for the longest stretch of any horse in this field — over seven months — and his last two races before that break were heavy defeats. He's had wind surgery since, which can sometimes spark a revival, and his trainer is the form trainer in this race with 4 winners from 10 runners in the past two weeks, but the lack of race fitness is a serious risk.

Wins 2 from 3 career races, which is the highest win rate in the field — even better than Ten Carat Harry — but he hasn't been seen on a racecourse for seven months, which is a significant concern. His trainer has gone winless from seven runners in the past two weeks, so there's little current momentum behind this horse heading into today.

Draws the widest stall in the field at 12, which is the worst position you can have at this course and distance — horses drawn in the high twenties win only 3% of races here, and while 12 isn't that extreme, the bias still works against him. He's also been off the track for nearly seven months, and his trainer has gone without a winner from nine runners in the past fortnight.

The top-rated horse in this race by 3lbs and the standout win record in the field — winning more than 1 in 2 races across a career is extraordinary. The catch is that he has never raced on dry ground before, so all those wins have come on artificial or softer surfaces. Today's conditions are an unknown quantity, and his price drifting out to 23.0 suggests the market has noticed.

Has the best record on dry ground of any runner here — 1 win from 3 races on that surface — but his last three outings were all heavy defeats in top-level company, so that form doesn't inspire confidence. The bigger concern is that he hasn't raced for over six months, and returning from a long break in a competitive race like this is a big ask.

The lowest-rated horse in the race by 7lbs below the field average, and the most experienced with 12 career races — but that extra experience hasn't translated into recent success, with a distant sixth last time out and no wins on dry ground from three attempts. Carries the lightest weight in the field, which is one small advantage, but the ratings gap between her and the top horses here is the biggest of any runner in the race.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
