Kesta

Eve Johnson Houghton's yard at Blewbury, which has sent out 42 winners this season, clearly has the quality to develop horses, yet Kesta's recent form tells a frustrating story. Its last six races show a pattern of modest finishes—a tenth place, then two eleventh-place runs, with a sixth and a fifth mixed in. Those are the results of a horse treading water, neither competitive at the top nor finding easier company to prosper in. Over its 17-race career, Kesta has finished in the first three on eight occasions (47% of the time), which points to genuine racing ability, but the win rate of roughly one in every five-and-a-half races (18% overall) has dried up completely in the past year.

Charles Bishop has ridden Kesta twice and won both times (a 29% win rate together), which is encouraging, yet consistency has been the persistent problem. The horse faces a critical juncture: either it needs to be placed in a race where it can compete at the right level, or something is preventing it from performing. At three years old, Kesta still has time to find its feet again, but another year without a win would suggest the October victory at Nottingham was an outlier rather than a sign of things to come.
