"You could say she's been a victim of the Great British Bonus scheme, but it's a nice problem to have. To explain, if it's a filly and is British bred, you get a £20,000 bonus for winning a two-year-old fillies' race. So whereas normally you'd give an ordinary horse three runs and go down the handicap route once they'd got the experience, it's such a big bonus that you're getting your fillies really fit for their first three runs, and they've only got to get placed a few times to end up with an inflated handicap mark. I've noticed a lot of fillies are higher up the handicap nowadays than they would have been before the bonus system, and this filly is a prime example. She has been placed several times in bonus races behind good horses and that meant she was a bit high when she started handicapping. But we eventually got our £20,000 bonus, so I'm not complaining too much. 27-08-25"
How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
