Gary Carroll

The partnership with trainer Gavin Cromwell is the engine room of Carroll's career. Fourteen wins from 120 rides together — again, roughly 1 in every 9 — tells you this is a combination that works. When a trainer keeps putting a jockey up, it means trust, and when that trust produces results at a consistent rate across a large sample of rides, it means something real is happening. Cromwell's horses clearly suit Carroll's style, and Carroll clearly knows how to ride for Cromwell.

There are two places where Carroll moves from reliable to exceptional. The first is Gowran Park, a compact, testing track in County Kilkenny where local knowledge and rhythm matter enormously. Eight winners from 37 rides there is a serious return — more than 1 in every 5 — and suggests Carroll has cracked the course in a way many of his rivals simply haven't. The second is wet ground. On genuinely soft or muddy going, he has won 3 from 15, which is 20% — 1 in every 5. That is meaningfully better than his overall average and hints at a jockey who rides with real confidence and patience when conditions get difficult and the race slows down.

And then there is Ascot. Both of Carroll's top-level victories — the highest class of race in Britain — have come at the most prestigious flat track in the world, including one as recently as 20 June 2025. Plenty of jockeys never win a top-level race at all. Carroll has two, and both at the same venue, which suggests he turns up for the big occasion rather than wilting under it. At 208 career winners and still only four years in, he is building something worth paying close attention to.
