Newmarket (July)

The most encouraging of the outsiders — just one race to its name but it finished second, showing it already has a competitive edge on its debut at Chepstow a fortnight ago. Second best price in the field at 12.0, which suggests some respect from the market despite having only that single run to show. It has the least experience of anyone here, but at least that experience came with a placed finish.

Only one race to go on, a fifth-place finish at Nottingham, which doesn't tell us a great deal. The jockey and trainer have yet to win together in 14 attempts, so there's no encouraging trend to lean on there either. Essentially an unknown quantity stepping into a race dominated by a much more experienced and higher-rated rival.

Making its first-ever appearance on a racecourse today, so there is genuinely no form to judge — it's a complete unknown. The draw in stall one is the most favourable in the field based on historical patterns at this course and distance, which is a small but real positive. Everything else is a leap of faith on debut.

Two races in with no wins and modest finishing positions, most recently fourth at Ffos Las — a much lower-profile venue than Newmarket. This is the first time this jockey and trainer have worked together, which adds another unknown into the mix. Nothing in the form so far suggests it can trouble the favourite.
