What is encouraging is the trajectory. The most recent run was a second place, which is about as close as you can get without actually winning, and with only two races under its belt, Vastern is still very much learning the ropes. Three-year-olds at this stage of the season are often still finding their feet, and a horse that places in its first two attempts is already doing better than most.
Vastern is trained by Adam Kirby, based at Kirtling on the outskirts of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing. The yard has sent out six winners this season, which suggests a team in decent form and capable of placing horses where they can be competitive. Having raced just one day ago, Vastern is clearly fit and active, and with a second place already on the board, a first win could come sooner rather than later.
