Joint top-rated but carrying a massive red flag: he's won just once from ten races on good-to-soft ground, and zero from five on soft. Three straight top-3 finishes look tempting until you realise this horse has struggled badly on the exact conditions he'll face today, making the odds of 5.5 generous rather than a steal.

The editorial choice is a course specialist who's won here three times from nine races and knows this exact distance, but the worrying detail is buried in his record: only one win from eight starts on good-to-soft ground, and he ran just yesterday. At 11 years old and fresh off a fourth-place finish here six weeks ago, the legs may not have recovered in time.

"We've just arranged for him to go around the Larkhill point-to-point cross-country course as his prep for running in the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday. He did seem to enjoy the banks when he ran at Cheltenham in November 2024, where there was that unfortunate incident with jockey Micheal Nolan when he ran out - for one reason or another we haven't been back there since. We tried to go there in October this year but the race was abandoned, so I feel we should have another crack at one. I'm not saying we'll end up at the festival, but if it goes well on Saturday we might do, or we might end up at Punchestown maybe. He's at that stage of his career now where we can just go and have a bit of fun with him. What we've always done well with him - and I have a very willing partner with his owner - is go for smaller races. Any time we have stepped up in class - we went for the Eider with him and ran him at Windsor - he's just not been up to that grade. He's better at being a big fish in a small pond. He loves Cartmel, and that will be where he ends up in the summer. So it is Cheltenham on Saturday then, if he runs well, we might think of the festival in the spring, but if not he'll have a freshen-up again for a summer campaign around Sedgefield and Cartmel. He's won 14 races - all handicaps and all over 3m-plus, and there's not many staying handicappers that can do that. He will win again. 21-01-26"

The market favourite is a Cartmel specialist with an extraordinary 50% win rate there — four wins from eight — and he's struck twice in the last two months on this very track. The problem is stark: zero wins from four attempts on good-to-soft ground, which is exactly what he'll encounter today, making his course form potentially worthless in these conditions.
"A nice bumper horse we've bought who goes very well and will run before the ground firms up. He won his only point and should be ready to run in mid-March. He's been steadily improving at home and his work has been really good. He's taken a bit of time but is very straightforward. He's improved steadily and I'll be surprised if he can't acquit himself really well in a bumper. We've had quite a few bumper winners in the last few years and his homework compares very favourably to all of those. I'd be very hopeful he's above average. 14-02-24"
Only 11% winner at age six with minimal recent experience — the UR at Perth 16 days ago suggests something went wrong. He's won twice but never on good-to-soft or soft ground, and with just two wins from nineteen races overall, he lacks both the form and the proven resilience this gruelling three-mile trip demands.

"He ran a great race at Doncaster, and he'll probably have one more run over hurdles and then go chasing in the summer. We'll see a different horse over a fence as he jumps so well. He'll be a really good summer chaser. 26-03-26"
Wins roughly 1 in 3 races — the best win rate in this field — and has two wins from his last six, but here's the catch: he's never run on slightly soft ground like today. The Perth victory three weeks ago is solid recent form, yet stepping into uncharted territory on a marathon trip at a track he's never conquered makes this a risky fancy.

Another Cartmel specialist with two wins from four here and three straight top-3 finishes, but like several rivals he's failed completely on good-to-soft ground — zero from four. A solid 24% overall win rate suggests he's a consistent performer, yet the ground concerns and his recent form plateau make him a vulnerable favourite at 9.6.

Lowest rated in the field and carries the lightest weight, yet boasts a 32% win rate — better than most — with three wins from six at Cartmel. The puzzle: he's won here before over this distance but struggled recently (two third-place finishes here in the last two months), and his strong record comes on good ground, not the slightly soft conditions today.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
