The market favourite at 3.75 and the most in-form horse in the race — he won here at Ayr just seven days ago and has finished in the top three in three races in a row. As a three-year-old he carries less weight than most rivals, which is an advantage, but he has zero wins from three attempts on faster ground and his overall record of one win from ten races means the market may be getting carried away. Returning to the scene of a recent win is a big plus though.

Rated 5lbs above the field average and our top pick on the figures, but there are real question marks here — the trainer is out of form and this horse has won zero times on normal ground conditions across nine attempts, which is exactly what we have today. He ran just two days ago at Hamilton, finishing second, so freshness isn't a concern, but that rapid turnaround is unusual. The odds drifting sharply from 1.1 to almost 5 tells you the market isn't convinced either.

"A very game horse who has kept on improving all year, including winning three races in a row between June and July. We probably went to the well a bit too often and he's on a break now and will come back next year. I'll be looking forward to him as a four-year-old. 01-10-25"

The standout course specialist in this field — two wins from just four visits to Ayr is a striking record for a horse that wins roughly 1 in every 8 or 9 races overall. She's been knocking on the door lately with three second-place finishes in her last five runs, so the winning form is there in spirit if not on paper. The concern is that all her wins have come on softer ground, and she has zero wins from ten attempts on faster conditions like today.

"I haven't done too much with my 2yos but this filly actually won first time out for us back in April. I don't usually have many youngsters out at that time of the year but she was showing a lot of speed and won well. Her next run at Pontefract was a different story as she was too keen and gave herself no chance, while at Redcar last time out she encountered good to firm ground for the first time and although she ran well, I felt she would appreciate a little more cut. We will look to upping her in trip to 6f next and find some slower ground. 26-07-23"

By far the most experienced horse in the race at 90 runs — the field averages just 29 — and crucially he's the best course specialist here with three wins from 12 visits to Ayr, winning roughly 1 in every 4 times he runs here. He finished third at this exact track just eight days ago, so he arrives in good rhythm and on ground he handles well. At 8 years old he knows exactly what he's doing, and normal conditions suit him far better than the soft or heavy ground he struggles on.

"He won twice for us as a juvenile and then left for a season before joining us in July after a Carlisle win for Rebecca Menzies. He's in the form of his life and has won twice more for us, rising from 61 to 76 in the handicap. He's far from straightforward but we know his quirks. He must walk to the start and goes in the stalls without a jockey. He was carried badly left and promoted to third in the stewards' room at Windsor last Thursday. He stayed down in the area and ran another good race on Saturday when fourth at Ascot, which more than paid for his trip. He thrives on his racing and could be a Bronze Cup hope at Ayr next week. 12-09-22"

The best career win rate in the field at roughly 1 in every 7 races, and her record on normal ground is excellent — three wins from ten attempts at 30%, the best ground figures of any runner today. She comes back just two days after running at Hamilton, where she finished sixth, so that quick turnaround needs watching. Draw 9 is the highest in the field and, at this course and distance, the low draws hold a clear advantage.

The lowest-rated horse in the race, 10lbs below the field average, and yet to win at Ayr in five previous attempts. He runs here just two days after finishing fourth at Hamilton, and this is the first time his jockey and trainer have worked together — not ideal preparation for a big run. Two wins from 37 career races and zero wins on normal ground across 16 attempts makes this a very tough ask.

Rated 9lbs below the field average — the lowest official rating alongside Doon The Glen — and carrying that into a race where the better-rated horses are already struggling for form. He finished 7th in both his last two runs, also at Ayr, so this track holds no obvious magic for him. His three career wins have all come on normal ground conditions, which is a small positive, but the weight of evidence here points firmly against.
She carries the highest official rating in the field at 65 — 6lbs above the average — yet the market has sent her out at 36-1, which tells you something important: the rating and the form are pointing in very different directions. She finished 9th and 14th in her last two runs, both at this track, beaten by big margins on each occasion. Zero wins from eight career races and a sharply declining recent form make this very hard to recommend.
Runs again after just 7 daysUnfancied in the market despite a high rating
The lightest weight in the race can be an advantage, but with zero wins and just one top-three finish from five career races, there is very little here to build a case on. Her last two runs produced 7th and 6th place finishes beaten by wide margins, and at 51-1 the market agrees this is a big ask. The data is thin simply because she hasn't raced much — she's the least experienced horse in the field.
How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
