Helm Rock

The trainer Daniel Kubler is candid about one recurring frustration: Helm Rock keeps getting drawn in terrible starting positions — wide on the track, almost out of sight — which has cost him races he deserved to win. The silver lining, as Kubler explains it, is that those unlucky results have nudged his official rating downward, to the point where the Kublers believe he will eventually be so much better than the horses around him that the draw simply won't matter. That is the kind of quiet confidence you only have in a horse you believe in.

What Helm Rock clearly believes in is wet ground. In muddy or soft conditions he has won 3 from 13 races — 23%, or nearly 1 in every 4. Compare that to his overall record and the gap is striking. Claire Kubler put it plainly after one win at Haydock: "you see the best of him in the mud." Haydock is, in fact, his happy hunting ground — 2 wins from just 5 visits, a remarkable ratio for any horse racing at this level. He also handles the all-weather surface well, including a Class 2 win at Kempton Park in September 2023, part of a ten-day spell in which he banked £70,000 in prize money — an extraordinary burst of form.

His most recent win came at Kempton Park in April 2026, just three months ago, and his last six runs read 4-7-6-2-3-1 — a second and a third sandwiched around a win, suggesting he is still right in the mix. Regular jockey Richard Kingscote has partnered him in 15 races, winning 2 of them, or roughly 1 in 8. The Kubler yard has sent out 34 winners this season alone, so Helm Rock is operating in an in-form stable. He raced just yesterday. At eight, he is not winding down — if anything, he is just getting started.
