Last year he was winning closer to 1 in every 8. The volume is still impressive; not many jockeys get close to 600 rides in a season. But the conversion rate has dropped, and the difference between winning 8% of your races and 12% of them, across nearly 600 rides, is a substantial number of near-misses.

There are pockets where things click particularly well. On normal ground conditions, Kingscote wins at 14% — 12 winners from 84 races, more than double his overall season rate. And at Brighton specifically, he has won 4 times from just 6 rides there, which is a remarkable record at a notoriously tricky, oval track that catches out plenty of experienced riders.

His most productive training partnership is with Daniel and Claire Kubler, where he has won 7 races from 51 rides together — roughly 1 in every 7, or 14%. That is almost twice his season average, and reflects a real working relationship built up over time. His link-up with Incredible Moment is, for now, a story without a win — three races together, no victories — though that partnership is presumably still a work in progress.

The headline is really this: 24 wins in the biggest races the sport offers, at the sport's grandest venues, with three of those arriving in the last three months. The numbers across the season as a whole are a little down, but Kingscote has a habit of showing up when the occasion is largest. That tends to be what people remember.
