Speeding Bullet runs best over six furlongs to a mile, and the numbers bear out the trainer's eye. He has won just once from eight attempts at that distance, but that single victory — at Pontefract in June 2025 — came on slow, muddy ground, and that is no accident. Midgley is clear about it: the horse wants juice in the ground and a shorter trip. When the yard experimented with a mile, it didn't work. When summer drought forced the horse to Newcastle over five furlongs, he ran respectably but it was never his game. Back to six furlongs on a wet track, and Speeding Bullet found the winner's enclosure. He has not won since, though he has placed in four of his last six outings, suggesting he remains competitive at the lower levels where he typically races.
