Speeding Bullet

Midgley has spoken warmly about the horse's attitude, describing how it puts its head down and gives absolutely everything. That kind of honest effort is not something every trainer gets from every horse, and it matters. What has taken longer to figure out is the exact conditions that bring out the best in Speeding Bullet. The yard tried him over seven furlongs early on, then stretched him to a mile, before eventually finding the answer: six furlongs on wet or muddy ground. Once they landed on that combination, the horse won at Pontefract in June 2025. That was his second career win, and it came nearly two years after his first, at Newmarket back in October 2023.

The problem since has been opportunity. A dry summer pushed Speeding Bullet to a five-furlong race at Newcastle — a shorter trip than he wants, on ground that was too quick for him. He ran respectably, finishing fourth, but it was a square peg in a round hole. His last six results read 7-7-11-2-2-4, which looks unremarkable until you realise the two second-place finishes came when conditions were closer to what he actually needs. He is a horse with a specific set of requirements, and when they are not met, he tends to tail off.

Most of his racing has come at Class 5 level — the bread and butter of the sport — where he has won 1 from 9, or roughly 1 in every 9 races at that grade. David Nolan has been in the saddle for six of his outings, winning once together, a win rate of about 1 in 6. Speeding Bullet raced just yesterday, so the season is very much still live. Find him on a soft day over six furlongs, and Midgley would likely tell you not to write him off.
