Zoom out and the overall numbers tell a quieter story: 6 wins and 12 places from 54 races, a win rate of around 1 in every 9. That is not a horse who dominates wherever it goes. But zoom back in on the conditions it loves and the picture sharpens considerably. On very wet, muddy ground, Rhoscolyn has won 2 of its 4 races — a 50% record that puts it in a completely different category. On softer, wet ground more generally, it wins roughly 1 in every 4 or 5 races (3 wins from 13). O'Meara has said the same himself: soft ground and seven furlongs brings out the best in the horse, particularly at Goodwood, where the wet conditions after a race-day downpour in late 2025 clearly did it no harm at all.

All six of Rhoscolyn's wins have come in top-level races — Class 1 or 2 — which means it has spent its entire career competing against some of the best horses in Britain, not working its way up through easier company. That context matters. Winning five Class 2 races is not the record of a horse that gets outclassed at the top; it is the record of one that delivers on the biggest days when everything lines up.

The recent form tells a different story for now. Rhoscolyn has not won in its last six races, and part-owner Dominic McFadden has acknowledged the horse lost its way for a spell. O'Meara has been through this before with the horse — after a strong first year with the yard, it paid the price with a higher rating and had to claw its way back. It did it once and has now won again at Goodwood at the highest level. Racing just one day ago and still active, the eight-year-old shows no sign of being retired. The question, as ever, is whether Goodwood in the wet is around the corner.
