The horse showed real promise early on, winning on his hurdle debut at Uttoxeter back in September 2025 before following up with an impressive walkover at Ludlow the following month. What makes that second win notable is that it came against no opposition at all, which tells you the yard felt confident enough to run him. Since then, however, Percy Shelley has gone ten months without another victory. His last six races have yielded two second-place finishes and a handful of mid-field efforts — the pattern of a horse that stays competitive but hasn't quite found the winning formula again.

The real clue to understanding Percy Shelley lies in distance. Over two miles and beyond, he has won 2 of his 13 races, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 6 or 7 attempts. That is genuinely solid form for a horse at his level. At Class 4 races — modest company by professional standards — he has won twice from 12 attempts, again showing he belongs in that grade. The trouble is he doesn't always run at those distances or in those conditions, which explains why his overall record looks so thin.

Trainer James Owen, who runs a busy Newmarket yard that has sent out 205 winners this season, clearly rates the horse enough to keep running him. Daniel Tudhope, his regular rider, has yet to taste success aboard him from five attempts, but that is not uncommon in racing. The real test will come when Percy Shelley gets back to what suits him — a long race at a track where conditions play to his strengths. When that happens, he is capable of winning again.
