The bright spot in Distinction's profile is its affinity for wet ground. When conditions turn muddy or sodden, the horse comes alive — it has won three of 15 races (a 20% win rate) on soft or heavy ground, double its overall average. That is a genuine edge, and at the start of winter it becomes genuinely useful information for anyone watching its card. More striking still is its dominance at Beverley, where it has won three of eight races. That is a course where Distinction genuinely belongs, and it should always be a serious player when it returns there.
Distinction's last win came on 19 August 2025 at Kempton Park, but it has been silent since — 14 months without victory is a long drought. Recently, jockey P J McDonald has ridden the horse three times, winning twice, and under his guidance Distinction shows a 21% win rate. Trainer John Mackie's yard at Church Broughton, Derbys, has sent out 16 winners this season and clearly believes in this old pro enough to keep it racing. Whether that faith pays off will depend partly on the ground and partly on getting back to Beverley, where Distinction remains a force.
