Charlie Mason

The most striking thing about Charlie Mason is its preference for wet ground. On slow, muddy surfaces, it wins roughly one in every five races — a win rate of 22 percent — compared to just 10 percent overall. That kind of difference matters. Trainers notice it, jockeys remember it, and it becomes a tactical advantage when the rain comes. The horse clearly has the temperament and the physical toughness to handle conditions that trouble many others. Its most recent success came at Lingfield Park back in June, and trainer Tony Carroll will be keeping an eye on the weather forecast, knowing that damp ground is when Charlie Mason is most likely to deliver.

What's less encouraging is the current form. The horse has not won in its last six races, with results reading 2-6-3-6-12-8 going back to the most recent outing. A couple of top-three finishes are there, but mostly it is finding life harder. At Class 5 level — the lower tier of racing — Charlie Mason has won three of twenty-three races, suggesting it can be competitive at its usual grade but is not quite a regular winner even there. With Jack Doughty having ridden it nine times for just one win, there is no obvious partnership magic working between horse and jockey. The yard of Tony Carroll is sending out plenty of winners this season across its stable, so the support structure is solid, but Charlie Mason will need conditions to align — wet ground, a sympathetic field, a confident ride — to get back into the winner's circle where it last tasted success four months ago.
