Jockey Warren Fentiman rode him that day and was visibly emotional afterwards, saying it meant the absolute world to him. The rain that arrived before the race gave him a moment of doubt, but Brazen Bolt answered the question convincingly. That speaks to another of his strengths: he is actually better when the ground gets soft and heavy. On wet, muddy ground he has won 2 from 4 races — a remarkable 50% — and on normal conditions he wins 5 from 13, which is 38%. For context, most horses are happy on one type of ground and struggle on the other. Brazen Bolt seems to welcome the variety.

Newcastle is where he got his start, and it remains a happy hunting ground — 2 wins from 7 races there, which any regular racegoer would recognise as the mark of a genuine course specialist. His most frequent partner is jockey Jason Hart, who has ridden him 11 times and won twice together, while Gianluca Sanna, who partnered him at Thirsk, described the experience simply: he jumped out, sat quietly, and the horse did the rest.
