The Flying Seagull

That single win came at Chester on 29 June 2024, and it matters where it happened. Chester is one of the most unusual racecourses in Britain — tight, circular, barely a mile round — and horses that take to it tend to take to it strongly. Hugo Palmer has spoken warmly about how well The Flying Seagull handles the track, calling him a fun sprinter who goes round Chester well. That kind of course form is genuinely useful, because if the right race comes up there again, you know he will not be lost on the track itself.

His recent form has been patchy — a 10th, a 3rd, a 10th, a 4th, a 6th, and a 4th in his last six runs — and he has not won since that Chester day, which is now more than two years ago. At his typical level, Class 4 races, he has won just 1 from 10 attempts, a 10% win rate. Palmer has pointed out, though, that bad draw positions have cost him on more than one occasion, including a run at Southwell where he was likely beaten by where he was placed in the stalls rather than by any lack of ability. That is the kind of detail that matters when you are trying to understand why a horse finishes where he does.

Palmer's yard has been in strong form this season, sending out 67 winners, so this is not a forgotten horse gathering dust. He raced just a day ago, and there is already a target in mind — a qualifying race at Lingfield that Palmer mentioned specifically as something to aim for. The Flying Seagull may not be a horse whose name ends up in the history books, but he is a live, active sprinter with a trainer who clearly has a plan for him and a track record that tells you Chester is worth watching.
