Westmorian

The most obvious is Southwell. Three wins from 8 races at that track is a remarkable return — that is more than 1 in every 3 visits producing a winner, at a venue where most horses are lucky to win once. Southwell has a synthetic all-weather surface that suits certain horses almost inexplicably, and Westmorian is clearly one of them. Add to that a strong preference for normal ground — 5 wins from 17 races, or nearly 1 in 3 — and you start to see a pattern. This is a horse that likes conditions to be predictable and fair, not too wet, not too firm.

The other thing that catches the eye is the winter of 2024–25. Tuer describes a horse who came alive over the all-weather season, culminating in a hat-trick at Lingfield on Good Friday — three wins in a row at the same track, which takes some doing at any level. That sequence pushed his official rating up to 90, which Tuer acknowledges looks ambitious but believes the horse can still compete at. The yard — which has sent out 29 winners already this season — is now pointing him toward the Ayr Silver Cup, one of the bigger sprint handicaps of the Scottish Flat season, if soft ground arrives in time.

The caveat is the current form. Westmorian has not won in his last 6 races, with his most recent finish a fourth — the best of that run, but a long way from the winner's enclosure. His last victory came at Lingfield in April 2025, 15 months ago now. Regular partner Sam James has ridden him in 16 of those races together for 2 wins — a return of roughly 1 in 8 — which suggests even the combination that knows him best finds him tough to win with consistently. The talent is clearly there. The question is whether the right conditions come along to unlock it again.
