The good news is that Venezuelan clearly has a range. He finds his best form at the mile-and-three-furlongs to mile-and-four-furlong distance, where he has won one of four races—a solid 25 percent return that stands out against the rest of his form. At the tougher Class 4 level, however, he has managed nothing from four attempts, which hints at a ceiling when stepping up in grade. His recent form has been a grind: two second-place finishes sandwiched around three eighth-place efforts and a fourth, with no wins in his last six races. That August victory at Lingfield now sits fourteen months in the rear-view mirror.

Gary Hanmer's Tattenhall yard in Cheshire has reason for optimism, though. Venezuelan was picked up by owner Peter Clarke after racing on the Flat for the respected trainer Ralph Beckett, and Hanmer sees genuine jumping potential in the horse. The plan is to give him another run or two on the Flat—likely starting at Chester—before introducing him to hurdle racing, where a fresh environment and different demands might unlock something new. For now, Venezuelan remains a horse very much in transition, searching for the consistency that would justify his promise.
