The Dragon King's first win came at Doncaster in May 2024, but the result that really turned heads arrived at Newmarket the following October. Cox admitted afterwards that at the halfway stage, with the horse last and apparently going nowhere, he was already composing the apology he'd give to owners. What followed was one of those moments that makes racing genuinely addictive — a charging, relentless run through the field to win a top-level Class 2 race, one of the best races in Britain. Cox was open about what he felt watching it unfold: when a horse comes with that kind of momentum, you know. The win prompted him to start talking publicly about a possible tilt at a Group 2 race, which represents the very upper tier of the sport.

The horse has clear preferences. On fast, dry ground, it wins 2 from 6 races, a rate of 33% — one in every three — which is exceptional at this level. At its natural home of Class 4 competition, the record reads 3 wins from 8 races, or 38%, close to two in every five. Those are the numbers of a horse that knows its best conditions and delivers when it finds them.

What makes the current moment interesting is the contrast. The last win came at Wolverhampton in November 2025, now eight months ago, and the last six runs have produced nothing better than a second place. Recent form reads 8-2-8-5-5-5 — patchy at best. Yet Cox was clear on his spring stable tour that the horse had physically developed over winter and was pleasing the team on the gallops. At four, he is right at the age when a horse can take a significant step forward. Whether that step is still to come, or whether Newmarket already represented the peak, is the question worth watching.
