The broader picture is of a horse who works hard without always being rewarded. Six wins and 20 places from 69 races tells you he gets into contention often enough — more than a quarter of his races have ended with a cheque — but converting those placings into victories has been the challenge. Most of his career has been spent in Class 6, the entry-level tier of British racing, where he has won 3 from 42 at a 7% rate. Honest, without being devastating.

Where he does look sharp is over the shortest trips. In sprint races under five furlongs, he has won 2 from 9 — roughly 1 in every 4-and-a-half races — and that 22% win rate is meaningfully better than anything else on his record. He also clearly appreciates normal ground conditions, winning 2 of 12 on a standard surface. Both trends point in the same direction: quick ground, a short, sharp race, and ideally a trip to Nottingham.

His trainer Ben Haslam operates out of Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire and has had a productive season, sending out 35 winners. That is a yard in form, which matters. Jockey Shane Gray has ridden him 17 times and won twice together — about 1 in every 8-and-a-half rides — a workmanlike partnership that clearly knows how to find the line when conditions suit. Sir Benedict's recent form reads 1-6-4-3-4-5, with that win at the head of the sequence coming just days ago. He is fit, he is active, and if the calendar takes him back to Nottingham, you would be foolish not to notice.
