Trained by Clive Cox at his Lambourn yard, Shagraan shows the hallmarks of a horse being built carefully rather than rushed. His career began modestly with a first win at Windsor in July 2023, but the progression has been deliberate. Tom Marquand has ridden him six times, winning once, and while that might not sound impressive on its face, the horse finds himself in a yard that has sent out 48 winners this season alone—the kind of outfit that knows how to place a horse right. Cox has spoken openly about the horse's potential, noting that he is still growing and believes Shagraan will develop into a Group-level performer, the highest standard in racing. After his Ascot win last October, there was genuine optimism that he had found his level.

What complicates the picture is the form line of his last six races: eighth, second, seventh, seventeenth, eleventh, third. That is a sobering stretch, particularly the seventeenth-place finish, and it explains why Shagraan has not won since his Ascot success nearly a year ago. He raced just three days ago and finished eighth, suggesting he is being kept active, but consistency at the top has eluded him. The horse appears to have the ability to peak at Class 1 level, yet converting that into a sustained run has proven difficult. At five years old, Shagraan is no longer a young prospect; he is a horse in his prime, and the question is whether he can string together the kind of form that his best two races promise he is capable of.
