What makes Chester such a perfect fit? His trainer Hugo Palmer has been refreshingly candid about it: the horse tends to lose interest when racing in a straight line, gets distracted by the crowd, and generally switches off when the racing gets predictable. Chester, with its famously tight, circular layout, keeps him engaged and plays perfectly to what Palmer calls his "balanced, agile, nimble" way of moving. In other words, the track doesn't just suit him — it seems to wake him up. That quirky personality, which might be a liability elsewhere, becomes a superpower at Chester.

The quality of those wins matters too. In May 2025 he won a Class 2 race at Chester — one of the better grades of race in Britain — and then, on 3 August 2025, he stepped up and won a Class 1, one of the very top races in the country. Palmer noted afterwards that Roman Dragon is "a sprint handicapper who pulled it out of the bag in a stakes race," which is a striking thing to say. Horses built for one type of race don't usually gate-crash the elite level and win. The fact that he did it at Chester felt almost inevitable. His most recent win came in May 2026, just two months ago, so this is a horse very much in the thick of an active career at seven years old.

Jockey Hayley Turner has ridden him in 6 races and won twice — a win rate of 33%, or 2 from 6, which is a strong partnership by any measure. Palmer's yard, based in nearby Malpas in Cheshire, has sent out 67 winners this season alone, so Roman Dragon is operating within one of the more productive operations in the country. The trainer's one honest concern is that Chester's rich racing calendar has limits — the better Roman Dragon gets, the fewer suitable races exist at his favourite track. For now, though, he is still racing, still winning, and still making Chester feel like home.
