That is a modest return, and the current losing run stretches back 30 months — six races without a victory, with recent finishes of 4th, 10th, 4th, 6th, 6th, and a distant 24th. The 24th is a blot on the page, though the cluster of fourth-place finishes suggests the horse is still competitive enough to be involved without quite getting its nose in front.

The partnership with Oisin Murphy is one of the more curious statistics in this profile. Murphy is one of the best jockeys in Britain — a multiple champion — yet he has drawn a blank across all 10 of his rides on Purosangue. That is not necessarily a knock on either horse or rider; some combinations simply do not click, and plenty of factors go into any individual race result. But ten attempts together without a win is a notable sequence all the same.

Robert Cowell trains Purosangue from his yard in Newmarket, the heartland of British flat racing, and the operation is clearly in decent health — 25 winners sent out already this season. Cowell specialises in fast, sharp horses, so Purosangue is in the right hands. The horse has spent the bulk of its career in Class 1 company, winning 1 of those 11 attempts at that level, which is a 9% win rate — about 1 in every 11 races. That is not unusual for the top grade, where the competition is fierce and even good horses can go long stretches without winning.

The York victory remains the headline. Winning at one of Britain's most prestigious tracks, at the sport's highest domestic level, is something most horses never manage. Purosangue has done it — and raced just one day ago, so it is clearly still active and still being aimed at good races. Whether it can rediscover that form after two and a half years away from the winner's enclosure is the question worth watching.
