That one win came at Great Yarmouth in September 2024, and it remains the only time Hold A Dream has reached the winner's enclosure. What makes the record slightly uncomfortable reading is that the horse has since gone six races without winning, and the last of those came nearly 19 months ago now. Six races of placing without winning is not a crisis, but it does start to raise a question: is this a horse that performs best when the pressure is off, or one that is simply waiting for the right opportunity to click?

The level at which Hold A Dream has been competing makes the absence of a win more understandable, if no less frustrating. All six of those winless races have come in Class 1 company — the very top tier of British racing. Zero wins from six races at that level is not embarrassing; it is simply a reflection of the standard. These are the hardest races to win, and finishing in the places repeatedly against that quality of opposition tells you this is a horse with genuine ability.

Hold A Dream is trained by Clive Cox at Lambourn, one of the great racing villages in Britain, and Cox's yard has sent out 47 winners already this season — a figure that suggests a well-oiled operation with horses in form. The horse returns now after a break of roughly five months, which is a significant gap. Horses can come back sharper after a rest, or they can need a race to find their rhythm again. Recent form of 2-3-9-2-5-2 before the break shows a horse that was largely consistent, with that one poor ninth-place finish standing out as the exception rather than the rule.

Whether the rest has recharged Hold A Dream or simply extended an already long wait for a second win is the question worth watching. The talent is clearly there. The winning feeling, for now, remains just out of reach.
