Hectic

The key to Hectic is the trip. Over five to six-and-a-half furlongs, this horse has won 3 of its 13 races — that is nearly 1 in every 4, which is a meaningfully different horse from the one that has failed to win any of its 10 races at the higher Class 4 level. It is the kind of split that tells you the horse has real ability, it just needs everything to fall right. Bailey himself has spoken about how physically imposing Hectic is — a heavy-set, strong type — and that physical presence seems to suit the shorter, more explosive distances rather than anything that asks for stamina.

The first win came at Newbury in July 2022, and Bailey was enthusiastic afterwards, noting that the horse was straightforward to train, almost self-managing, and that there was plenty of improvement still to come. The jockey that day felt the ground was decent underfoot, though Bailey was confident the horse would go even better on faster, firmer ground. That early promise pointed toward good-quality races further down the line. Since then, progress has been uneven — Bailey has previously spoken about the horse taking time to recover mentally after a difficult run, which explains some of the patchy form across the career record.

The most recent win came at Ripon in June 2025, so the clock has been ticking for over a year without a return to the winner's enclosure. The last six races read 9-4-4-14-7-5, and while the two fourth-place finishes suggest the ability is still there, the horse is clearly hunting for the right opportunity. Billy Garritty, who rides Hectic most often, has won 1 of their 6 races together — roughly 1 in 6 — which is a reasonable record without being exceptional. Bailey's yard has sent out 17 winners this season, so the stable is in decent form. Whether Hectic can add to that tally soon may come down to finding the right race at the right distance.
