Gunfighter

The numbers that really stand out belong to Gunfighter on normal ground over a trip of seven furlongs to a mile. On that surface he has won 3 of his 6 races — half of them — which is a remarkable conversion rate for a horse who otherwise finds winning hard work. It suggests he is not short of talent, just specific about when and where he wants to show it. At seven furlongs to a mile he has won 2 of 9, which is roughly 1 in 4 at his preferred trip — a meaningful figure when you consider he races most of his career at Class 4 level, the bread-and-butter tier of the sport.

His first win came at Newcastle in September 2023, but the more telling moment arrived this week — a win at Southwell on 5 July 2026. Recent form had looked rough, with a run of finishes reading 12th, 13th, 7th, and 9th in between, so that third place and then the win suggest something has clicked back into place. Butler was already confident in the horse well before that, saying early on that Gunfighter was better than his early results showed and that a win was coming sooner rather than later. He was proved right once, and the evidence from this week suggests he may be right again.

The most interesting version of Gunfighter is a simple one: get him on normal ground, over his favoured distance, and the horse becomes genuinely competitive. The challenge has always been that those conditions do not always arrive together. When they do, he is a different animal entirely.
