Her career win rate sits at roughly 1 in every 6 races (17%), and she has done most of her racing at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing — where she has won 2 of her 12 races at that grade. It is a modest but honest level, and she has held her own in it. The highlight so far came at Haydock Park in September 2024, her most recent win, though that is now nearly 20 months in the rearview mirror. The six races since have produced nothing better than a third place, and her last six results — two placings among four also-rans — suggest a horse that has been doing enough to stay in the conversation without quite finding the winning thread again.

She is now returning from a seven-month absence, which is a significant layoff and one that almost always means a first run back is about shaking the rust off rather than winning. Her trainer Sam England, who is based in Guiseley in West Yorkshire and has sent out 53 winners this season — a yard clearly in good health — has been candid about this. He noted that her first run back at Chelmsford was needed badly, essentially a fitness exercise. The more telling detail is what he said about the ground: she wants wet or muddy conditions to show her best, and with a dry spell continuing, she may well head to Kempton on 5 May for a race aimed at horses her age and type.

That is the key thing to watch here. A horse who needs soft ground but is being pointed at a race during a dry spell is already running into a headwind. If conditions change, or if England waits for a softer surface, there is every reason to think Free Speech can get back to winning. She has improved as she has got older, the yard is in fine form, and she knows how to win. The pieces are there — the ground just needs to play ball.
