He has won twice from 8 races at Newcastle, which might sound modest until you consider how rarely horses return to the same venue and win more than once at a decent level. After his most recent Newcastle win last June, jockey David Allan was candid about how the pieces had to fall into place — a headwind, plenty of cover, held up through the race. "Arguably his best form is at Newcastle," Allan said, and the numbers back that up.

Oisin Murphy, one of the best jockeys in the country, has ridden him to both of those Newcastle wins and has a 2-from-8 record on him overall — winning 25% of their races together, or 1 in every 4. After the most recent of those wins Murphy suggested it might be "the beginning of a decent season," which in racing terms is the kind of careful optimism that comes with experience.

At eight years old, Fivethousandtoone raced just one day ago and is clearly still being trained hard and aimed at decent targets. His recent run of 11 races without a win is worth noting, and the last six results — which include a sixth, an eleventh, a second, a third, a ninth, and a seventeenth — show a horse still capable of placing but searching for that next moment when everything clicks again. On his day, at Newcastle, it has a habit of happening.
