The horse's real strength is at Newcastle, where it has won twice from nine races—a win rate of roughly one in every five visits to that track. That kind of course specialisation matters: it suggests the horse has found a place where the surface, the layout, or simply the rhythm of racing there plays to its strengths. Its most recent victory came at Newcastle on artificial ground back in June 2025, more than a year ago now, which tells you something about how long it has been since things came together properly. Before that, it had not won since February 2024, another Newcastle success on the all-weather. The horse also had success on normal ground—winning twice from fourteen races on that surface—which hints at a preference for straightforward conditions over the very soft or very firm.

Trainer Tim Easterby, based in North Yorkshire, has found Fivethousandtoone a tricky puzzle to solve. The horse came to the yard relatively recently, and the post-race comments suggest a period of trial and error before finding the right tactics. When it does win, the pattern is clear: held up in the race, given cover, and allowed to make its move late. That approach worked perfectly at Newcastle in June. Jockey David Allan, who was in the saddle that day, noted that the headwind and the way the race unfolded gave the horse every chance. The puzzle now is whether Fivethousandtoone can rediscover that form, or whether those three Class 2 wins remain the high-water mark of its career. It was last seen just a day ago, still active and still competing, which means there is at least a chance the old horse has something left to give.
