On fast, dry ground at Newbury, with that rare spell of smooth preparation behind him, Eydon showed exactly what he is capable of. The trainer's words — "he's high class" — were not spin. They were a statement of what this horse is when he is right.

His two Class 1 wins are separated by three years: Newmarket in April 2022, when he was only on his second run on turf and finished ahead of Group-race winners, and Newbury in May 2025, the comeback that Balding spoke about with such evident relief. The gap between those wins is not a story of a horse going backwards — it is a story of one battling through persistent setbacks to reach the top again. Over a longer trip of a mile and three quarters to two miles, he wins 1 in every 3 races, which is the kind of figure that suggests the stamina tests suit him well.

Now he returns after a 115-day break — roughly three months off. His recent form shows a win, two seconds, a fourth, and a distant eleventh, so the sequence cuts both ways. The yard itself is in fine fettle: Andrew Balding has sent out 204 winners this season, which is a genuinely productive operation. Whether Eydon comes back with the same freshness that unlocked that Newbury win is the question. Given everything he has been through, the fact that he keeps returning at all says something worth respecting.
