The story begins with genuine hope. In his first two races, at Wolverhampton and then Newcastle in April 2022, he won both. That second win, a bolting-up performance in Listed company at Newcastle, was so impressive that it sparked serious Guineas talk. His trainer William Knight, based at Newmarket, genuinely believed he had found something special. But the 2,000 Guineas didn't work out—he got wiped out at the start, lost his action, and never recovered. That single setback seemed to change everything.

Since then, Checkandchallenge has won just once in his last 34 races. He took a Class 1 race at Newmarket in November 2023—his most recent victory, now 35 months in the past. His recent form tells the story: second, twelfth, fourteenth, third, tenth, sixth. Not disastrous, but persistently disappointing for a horse that had arrived with such fanfare. His career record stands at 3 wins from 36 races—roughly one win in every twelve outings—and he typically runs at the top level, winning just 2 from 27 Class 1 attempts.

There is one bright spot. At distances of a mile and three furlongs to a mile and a quarter, he has won 1 from 3 races—a third of his attempts. Knight believes that distance suits him, and the post-race comments from Newmarket suggest the horse has not run badly in hot company even when beaten; he was fourth in a Group One at Ascot and fourth again in a recent run. After spending so long in the wilderness, Checkandchallenge remains a useful hand at the top level—just not the champion that early promise suggested he might become.
