There are bright spots. Beverley is Bell Shot's playground. The horse has won three of its five races there — better than a 60 percent win rate at that track, the kind of specialist record that gets noticed in the betting markets. Even more striking: put it on slightly soft or muddy ground, and Bell Shot becomes a different prospect entirely, winning two of three races (67 percent). That tells you something useful if the weather turns.

Michael Appleby's yard at Oakham has been firing this season with 71 winners, so the infrastructure is solid. But it is worth noting that Alistair Rawlinson, Bell Shot's most regular partner with 12 rides, has managed just one win from those 12 — an 8 percent return that lags well behind the horse's overall record. That might be coincidence, or it might suggest a better match awaits elsewhere. At seven years old and without a win since the new year, Bell Shot is at a crossroads: still capable of winning in the right circumstances, but time is not infinite. The window for courses like Beverley and conditions like soft ground may be narrowing.
