Beaming Light

Almost everything good that has happened to Beaming Light has happened at a specific distance: between one mile and one furlong and one mile and two furlongs. All three of her career wins have come at that trip, from 16 attempts — a win rate of 19%, or roughly 1 in every 5 races at that range. Away from it, she has nothing. That tells you this is a horse who needs things set up just right, and when they are, she delivers.

What makes the record quietly awkward is the class question. She typically runs in Class 5 races — the lower end of the racing ladder — and has yet to win at that level in 15 attempts. Her wins have come elsewhere, which raises an interesting puzzle: she finds a way to win when the conditions suit her, but not in the races she most frequently enters. Her last win came at Ffos Las on 29 June last year — nearly 11 months ago now — and before that she broke through at Chelmsford just a fortnight earlier. Two wins in quick succession, then nothing across her last six races, all of which have been mid-to-back-of-field finishes.

The most encouraging thread in her profile is her partnership with jockey Richard Kingscote. In five races together, they have won twice — a remarkable win rate of 40%, or 2 from 5. For context, that is a far better return than anything her overall record would suggest she is capable of. When Kingscote is in the saddle and the distance is right, Beaming Light becomes a different proposition.

Trained by David Loughnane at his yard in Stoke Heath, Shropshire — a operation in good form with 38 winners already this season — she raced just yesterday, so she is very much an active runner. The recent form figures make grim reading: sixth, fifth, sixth, eighth, sixth, sixth. But with the right jockey, the right distance, and a little luck, she has shown she can find the line.
