What makes Afloat genuinely interesting is its complete mastery of Great Yarmouth. The horse has won three times from five races at the Norfolk track—a 60% win rate that stands out sharply against its overall 15% win rate. There is something about that course that brings out the best in it, and that record alone marks it as a horse worth following when it heads back there. Equally telling is Afloat's preference for slightly soft, muddy ground. On those conditions, it has won twice from four races—a 50% win rate. Fast, firm ground seems to work against it, and trainer Gavin Cromwell's yard in Navan will know to time its runs accordingly.

Afloat also performs noticeably better over longer distances, winning four of its 17 races between one mile three furlongs and one mile four furlongs. When ridden by Callum Shepherd, the horse improves markedly: the pair have won twice from seven races together, a 29% win rate that suggests real synergy. Yet at Class 4 level—where it typically races—Afloat manages only one win from eleven attempts, suggesting it sometimes struggles against the sort of opposition it regularly faces. The horse is active and still racing, most recently competing just a day ago. It may be past its peak, but its record at Great Yarmouth on soft ground hints that the right circumstances could yet produce another win.
